Well...
It's not that we're "supposed" to celebrate them....it's just that we do out of love.
Christmas for instance.....the birth of Christ. Who wouldn't want to celebrate that?
It doesn't matter that Christ wasn't born on the 25th.....the point is....commemorating His entrance onto the planet to save us from our sins.
Nothing pagan about that....like some people will try to make you believe

The main Holiday in Christianity is the Easter (Paschal) Triddum. Consisting of three days Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday(the most holy night of the year). . . they represent the suffering death and ressurection (all of which were instrumental in salvation. the entire christian year revolves around these three days).
Easter Sunday is not the most important (in fact Christmas and Epiphany (the birth and revealing of Christ) would come before Easter in importance) because Easter day itself only celebrates the discovery of the resurrection after the fact not the ressurection itself.
Pentecost (the end of the Easter Season) the gifts of the Holy Spirit.
Ash Wednesday (the beginning of Lent) marking the start of the preparation for the coming of Christ.
Every Sunday is a celebration day.
EDIT:
in response to the Christmas thing. the date of Christmas was fixed from the date of Crucifixtion. Since Passover is a floating holiday the closest Sunday fixed to it was March 25 (which became Annunciation day (the day Mary conceived) and 9 months later is Decemeber 25.
Based on the theory that the perfect life will die at the same moment it is conceived. For Jesus to be conceived on March 25 means he had to be born Decemeber 25.
A number of people try to claim the date was stolen from pagan holidays, it was not all of the Egyptian gods and godesses they try to say it is taken from were actually celebrated in the summer or spring.
As far as Mithra, even Mithranc scholars do not believe Christinaity stole anything from Mithra. "The only domain in which we can ascertain in detail the extent to which Christianity imitated Mithraism is that of art." Mithraic Studies: Proceedings of the First International Congress of Mithraic Studies. Manchester U. Press, 1975. p 59

Christmas is a man-made holiday! Christians can celebrate the birth of Christ any day of the year or every day of the year. Jews honor the Sabbath, but that wasn't given to the Gentiles. As Christ followers we see an example of when to meet in the Book of Acts of The Apostles 20:7. That is our holiday, on the first day of the week. To worship in truth and in spirit!!
HeatherToYou is confused!! True Christians don't observe pagan rituals. Non-believers or those that don't know God's word do that.

These days the main Christian holidays are Christmas (Christ's birth) and Easter (rising from the dead). Back in the day though the Christians had a holiday pretty much every week. Check out the Christian liturgical year: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liturgical_year
Celebrate them however you want.

Christmas celebrates the birth of Christ. You are supposed to be thankful for what God did when he brought Jesus to this world. Its not supposed to be about gifts but its ok to give them out as long as the focus remains on Christ and family.
Easter celebrates the resurrection of Christ.
Its similar to Christmas in that we are thankful for the sacrifice Jesus made for us to live.
These are theonly ones I can think of. I guess the holidays vary by each christian denomination. I am non-denominational christian so I guess this is it for me. At least that I can think of. : )
And yeah like some other dude said we do it out of (most of us) not because we have to. God Bless

The only day we are suppose to celebrate is once a week in honor of the lord resting on the 7th day.
Every other "Holiday" is man made.

"celebrate" may be the wrong term there. you all spend so much time fearing and appeasing your god that celebration smacks of sacrilege. sorry to rain on your parade.
And if there is nothing pagan about having Dec 25 as the birth of christ, why is it days from the solstice and why do you burn the yule log?

THEY STOLE ALL OF THEIR HOLIDAYS FROM PAGANS OR JEWS.
whoops sorry didnt realize i was typing in caps.
but all of the holidays that christians have are merged with the old holidays from paganism. and its funny because they even do the pagan rituals that go along with them. (easter bunny/eggs, presents)
huh. wow wonder what god has to say about that
