The Pro edition is the real thing,, with all the options and add-ons available. The Home edition is the Pro with some things taken away or locked down in the name of simplification for the unsophisticated user. The home edition is OK for the basic home, stand-alone computer. I have heard of people who have had security lock them out of something they needed to do because the default is locked in on the Home edition while there is more control in Pro. Pro is more designed for networking and has a lot of tools to help. I have Pro and I can run a whole development test environment on my laptop, which I wasn't thinking about when I bought the machine, but I bought it with Pro, so everything was there. And that's probably the biggest thing: you can save a few bucks by buying Home, and then your needs change and you want to use a remote feature or customize a security setting and you're stuck.

Most games are built to run on a windows platform. I know there are a few games for Mac (i.e World of Warcraft) But Linux is a by far better OS when it comes to performance and Security, IMO. But if your looking for running games and media..i would stick with Xp or upgrade to Xp Pro-Media center

Home Edition is a version of Pro with less features eg:
* Remote Desktop (but you can easily download it)
* Encryption (but there are other tools available)

Hope it helps!

Essentially WinXP Pro has a security feature that WinXP Home does not. It encrypts files.
