anyone have experience of using a sat nav and speed cam software?

I now have use of a car!! (hooray)
I don't know UK very well. grew up in TASMANIA
SO DON'T TELL ME TO JUST USE A MAP, PLEASE

I have seen these Tom Tom satellite navigator units and I hear you can get add on software to make them speed camera detectors too
does anyone use one?
are they any good?
where do you get the speed camera software from? is it free on the 'net? how about getting it onto the tom tom thingy? is it easy?

I've used the TomTom software ona PDA, but not the dedicated units, and as long as you keep the "points of interest" for the cameras up to dat, they are good. But do not rely on it 100% YOU MUST be aware, also police cars move as do mobile vans.

From the point of navigation they are great, I used it to find addresses in London for my job, often with doorstep accuracy.

Have fun driving, but remember that although you can get help to spot the cameras, the new mobile vans can read your car number and issue a ticket for speeding before you've had time to see it and react, so DO BE CAREFUL.

Can't condone speeding, but know it's something 99.9% of driver do to some degree.

I've used a sat-nav quite a lot, and very useful it is, but you still have to apply some common sense; there was a case not long ago where some woman drove her new Mercedes into a river because the sat-nav told her to!
Regarding the speed cameras, you need to be aware that you have to keep the database up to date and also that there are plenty of mobile checks out there.

you can pick up a tom tom off of ebay for a reasonable amount, and you can get the speed cam software there too.
it's easy to put it in, and you just use the 'point of interest' function to put in the speed cam warning.
I use speed cam warnings and they are very useful. I drive a lot and no one is perfect - i was unawre of the lamposts ruling in the article and I bet 99.999% of all other drivers would get caught in a similar situation, too.
I recently drove in Germany with my Tom Tom and it was so useful to be able to drive door-to-door without having to stop and look at a map every couple of miles
expensive at first, but my tom tom has paid for itself dozens of times over
