yeah I know. I used to drink Guinness in the pubs then lager in the clubs (years ago, before they sold Guinness). Trouble is that after the Guinness the lager tasted like lemonade and what with the fizz I ended up getting wasted.
But I wouldn't say lager is sweet and fizzy. It tastes quite quenching, especially if it is noce and cold on a hot summer's day. Try something like a Gambrinus (Grambinus?) - a good czech lager to see what I mean.
I know lots of people who drink bitter in winter and lager in summer. I tend to go for bitter more in the winter. I love Speckled Hen, Ruddles and some of the stronger tasting ones too.
One problem with drinking bitter is your f*rts can smell a lot worse in the night (wives and girlfriends often disapprove for this reason.)
Actually quite a lot of real ale experts like and respect good quality lagers.
you might want to try the ones with the German purity laws written on the side, or like I said earlier a good czech one.

Lager is sort of a "starter" beer. Wine newbies tend to gravitate to White Zin because it's sweet and somewhat tart, easy to take for a beginner. Cabernet Sauvignon would be too much. Likewise, a beer newbie will not start with Yuengling Porter, but something less bitter. You need stepping stones.

the same reason starbucks is so popular. people don't really like coffee. so they put different syrups and creams and crap to make it not taste like the deliciously strong and bitter drink that god meant for us to drink. some lagers are ok, but the american style and pilsner style lagers are not for me. i like to be able to taste everything about my beer. i like to call lagers lawnmower beer. the only thing they are good for is after mowing the lawn in 90 degree weather. then, yes an ice cold budweiser does hit the spot. that is about it though.

Most of the beers brewed in England are full of yeast, malt, barley and hops and makes you fart.
Lager is brewed without the heavy ingredients and does not have the windy aftereffects even if you drink it all night.

i drink Guinness, but i tend to find myself drinking lager when it is warmer outside! If i am going out for a night where i am going to be moving from pub to pub i will drink lager, because pubs and guinness can be so unreliable. (some pubs have no idea how to look after it or serve it) Real ales are similar to guinness, it must be looked after properly. Oh and they taste horrible!

I like both it, depends on the mood I am in. Beer when I want quiet reflecting time, lager for fun or social time.

It works like this
16-19 year olds drink cider
19 - 29 year olds drink lager
29 + move onto real ale.
Other people drink Guiness.
(Its not completley accurate, but its ball park stuff).
