Actually, common figures are 4-5 BC for His birth, and 29 AD for His death.
Remember also that there is no year 0.

Dear Aaron,
Jesus was born in 7 BC and died in 33 AD. From everything the Bible tells us, Jesus was 38.5 years old when He died on the cross. I do not know the significance of this, but if you multiply 38.5 X 2=77. The number "7" has definite spiritual meaning.
Please check my sources.

Factual information on the historical Jesus (as opposed to the theological person) is very limited.
I've included two links that might help flesh out this person.
There are many different views on the actual birth year.
Most historians conclude he was born between 6-4 B.C.E. (before the common era).
Some scholars believe Jesus was born earlier than 4 B.C.E. (which jives with the Matthew Gospel).
Few scholars claim to know the exact year of his death.
Some put the year roughly at 36 C.E.
So, where does that leave us?
Best guess, Jesus was somewhere in his mid-to-late 30's when he died.

The whole christian calendar is based on his birth.
BC means Before Christ
AD means Anno Domini (in the year of our lord)
This is why the Chinese, the Jews, and several other cultures have different calendars than that which has been widely accepted by western civilization (and i use that last term very loosely).
On the other hand, there is no "historical" evidence of his birth, life or death. Just like he wasn't actually born on Dec 25 (but it was a good way to bogey the winter solstice) and didn't really die on the 40th day after passover. But 33 is such a nice, round (magical) number, that it became the popular age given.

Most scholars use 30 or 33 because it was during these years that the Nisan dates for Passover complied with the gospel descriptions.

Historians can only approximate the date of birth of Jesus So when they say he was 33 when he was crucified, this is also an approximation.

he couldn't be born 5-7 BC because BC means BEFORE CHRIST, that just wouldn't make any sense.
