They want documentation.
Is the annual statement from my church good enough or do they need more?

The IRS will accept your church's annual statement.

What they want to do is match what you have declared on your tax return (Schedule A). For instance, if you declared $2,100 on your Sch A with only $2,000 coming from your church, then you also have to provide something else as to where the extra $100 went to.

If you gave cash, the IRS requirement for 2006 is:

1. For contributions of less than $250, bank register, cancelled checks, credit card or cash receipts are sufficient documentation.

2. Contributions of $250 or more require a written acknowledgement from the charity. Your church statement would be sufficient for this purpose.

If that was the only charity you gave to, it should be good enough. If there were others, provide those receipts also. If it was small amounts to various charities, make a list of them with the amounts and include it with the church statement.

If that's the donation in question, the annual statement from your church should be just what they're looking for. If they want something additional, they'll let you know.
