Yep. Except the "i" is more of an "ee".
There's always bound be a language in which someones name sounds hilarious. For example in Russian, the name of the leader of Hezbollah, which is Nasrallah, literally sounds like the word "nasrala". That is a vulgar way to say "she crapped". Whenever they say his name on television, they try to shift the stress or make it into 2 words, but it still sounds hilarious.

In my history classes and in all the videos we had to watch, it was always pronounced "Pootin."

It would be more like "Pooteen". It's hard to transliterate Russian into western letters sometimes, since Russian uses the Cyrillic alphabet.

In French it's 'poutine' (poo-teen), so possibly. The Russian way of spelling it is Путин, and the 'y' represents to 'oo' sound, so possibly. However, I still pronounce it 'pyoo-tin'.
