Yes it does. I used to get depress a lot when I was in teenage years. And I find keeping a journal/diary does help. It help me burst out my feelings without anyone criticizing it. When you're depress, sometimes you just need someone to listen rather than someone giving you advices. And the only good listener you can get is your self. And you will find that good listener in you when you start writing down how you feel, or how'd you go and reading it back to your self, helps you see what you should've done or what you'll do next time around.

A journal helps because one is letting out here feelings instead of keeping than bottled up inside. Over time you can go back and read it over and might be surprised to find there is one common factor throughout which can be the cause of the depression. The main thing is to be able to "talk" about what is bothering you. Give it a try as it truly works. Good luck

People who are depressed often have a skewed view of what's happening around them on a day-to-day basis. Keeping a journal helps keep them grounded. Also, the many people who are depressed have a hard time communicating what they feel, so a journal offers them a safe place to vent and explore those feelings, put them into order.

It depends on what you put in your journal. If you put stuff in it like, when you went to sleep, how long you slept, what types of foods you are eating, and how they make you feel; journaling can help you pick out patterns on what may be triggering worse or better days or hours. As you know, with depression you can become hypersensitive sometimes, or sometimes, the opposite (numb). If you are hypersensitive, a journal may actually foster brooding at the time. Really, I think it depends what you put in your journal in order for it to be therapeutic.

Sara has a great answer!! Not only is it a good outlet for emotions, keeping track of what you ate and sleeping patterns, it is also great for keeping track of events in your daily life.
Keeping a good jounal helps to keep track of what the triggers to your depressive episodes are and helps you to learn how to avoid them and what you might do different to stop them from happening too often.
I also "used to" suffer terribly from depression and no amount of "counciling" could help. I had to "cure" myself. The journal is a GREAT place to start.
Don't get me wrong, there is no sure cure to stopping depression all together but there are ways to not "suffer" from it.
Good luck to you.

It can help as an outlet of anger and sadness. Alot of people who are depressed are angry at themselves. So by letting some of the anger out, you will feel more relieved and happy. It's not the cure, but it should help.

A journal can be an outlet for thoughts and emotions as well as a breeding ground for positive thinking.

It is a way to organize thinking so you can express them in an understandable fashion. It is also a way to vent emotions. And it is a very good way to help a therapist understand you, when you show it to them.

You let out your feelings and it makes them not seem so bad so you get happier and it makes you less depressed.
