My husband said I could get a kitten for my anniversary present - I'm so happy! My first inclination is always to check local shelters (this is where I got my 2 current cats - male and female tabbies both fixed) but this time my husband said I could get ANYTHING I wanted and I've always loved how Abyssinians look. Can anyone with personal experience of the breed tell me what their temperaments are like? I've heard conflicting things like "Abby's are NOT lap cats" and "Abby's are very affectionate."

I want a VERY affectionate and sociable kitten because we are a family with 2 young children, 2 cats and 2 dogs.

Also, does anyone know what a reasonable price is for an Abyssinian? I know he told me to "shoot the works" but I don't want this to be too expensive......

I don't have an abby but I also love them! I have a purebred bengal While these cats are "not lapcats" I have spoken with people who say their bengals are always in their laps. Mine will sometimes curle up in my lap or in the crook of my knees and he's so gentle, but hates to be held. He's NOT a lapcat, he's to hyper. I think it depends upon personality. It IS possible to get an abby that will be a cuddler, just have to meet the kittens an see if there personality is condusive to being more affectionate. My 17 pound orange cat is NOT a lap cat, but loves to be around me and loves to be pet and they ALL sleep with me at night. my 11 year old mixed tabby is the real lovebug, but even she doesn't curl up on my lap. I can hold her and cuddle her and then after 20 minutes, that's enough, but she always comes back for more. If you want a very docile lapcat, get a ragdoll cat. You won't be dissapointed and they too are very pretty.
Buy a copy of "cats" magazine and in the back there are contacts for all sorts of breeds of cats. Or Google it! : )

Try picking up a local newspaper. Some people will put in that they their cat had kittens and they are trying to give them away. A lot of time if they don't give all of them away they go to the animal shelter. That's a great way to get a cat! always keep an eye at the animal shelter. Saving a cat is always better then just buying one from a breeder. the best cat I've ever had was picked up from someone who's cat had kittens and they needed to give the kittens away or they would go the the humane society. Also, when you find the right cat you will know it. sometimes it can take some time. Good luck and remember when picking out cat food look for food that doesn't have any animal bi-products in it. its kind of like junk food for your cat and you will spend a little more in food getting the good stuff but it will help keep your kitty healthy and their coat shiny and it reduces the smells from the litter box! Good Luck!

no matter what breed of cat you get, its temperment will depend on how it was brought up from when it was born. so go for whatever breed you want, and just find a very nice cattery who actually take the time to love their cats. and even if you do get a friendly cat, she may not be loved by your other animals. so take it very slow when you introduce your pets to the new kitten, and expect some hissing and small fights! hope this helps =D
