there seems to be a lot of re-occuring numbers in the Bible and I am wondering their significance. For example, 40 days of flooding and Jesus' 40 days in the desert. This is only one example of many, is there a significance?

These are the significance of the recurring numbers in the Bible as I was taught them:

1- God's number
2- Adequate witness
3- Manifestation
4- the world
5- Grace
6- man
7- Eternity, perfection, completion
8- new beginnings
9- divine manifestation
10- man's responsibility
50 - Harvest

Now I had to look up this one:
40 THE NUMBER OF PROBATION OR TRIAL. The Israelites wandered for 40 years (Deut. 8:2-5). Moses was on the mount for 40 days (Exodus 24:18); 40 days of Jonah and Nineveh (Jonah 3:4). Jesus was tempted for 40 days (Matt. 4:2).

I think that explanation is good. But I notice that I disagree with their interpretation of 10.

Many numbers have significance in the bible. 6, is the number for sin... 666 in revelation = the Antichrist.... 7 is the number indicative of heaven or "perfect" 40 too is the number to mean exactly how long something needed to last... a perfect number. If Jesus was tempted int the desert for only 30 days, he wouldn't have been tested enough...

6+7 = 13, which is why it's supposed to be unlucky.
btw, it's only 40 days and nights of rain... the waters remained on earth for 5 months, or 150 days~ to make sure everything died.

Numbers in the bible have a lot of significance. 3, 7, and 10 were considered holy and perfect numbers. Things like 7x7 and then the year ie, 50 year jubilee, are considered perfect numbers (like 10x10x10 = 1000 year reign after Christ (combines 10 and 3). Also 40, 12 and others have significance as well. Study up, it's very interesting!

nicely, it particularly facilitates you come across a particular portion of the bible. think of of what proportion variations of the Bible there are. If people reported "on website 235 of the Bible" it does not artwork - it would basically notice to that particular version. to illustrate, John 3:sixteen potential it is financial disaster 3 of John, verse sixteen. a similar works with Shakespeare. My english instructor never enable us to declare "website 23 of Hamlet" we would could desire to declare "Act 3, secne 2, line 22."

The Bible has had numerologists talking about it's number content for centuries. There are lot of recurring numbers and some people believe that its the key to "cracking" the Bible code.

I like to think about it as just a coincidence. =)

The number "forty" in Bible times is similar to the way we would use "a million." Generally, it just means "a bunch."

Certain numbers are considered lucky while others are taboo in Middle Eastern culture. Seven, for example, is lucky while three's (and it's factors) are consider evil. 666 is divisible by 3 for example. Though oddly enough there are 7 deadly sins...hmmmm.
