Sounds like Memento, a good (if freaky) film.
Keep in mind that is fiction, and obviously they are more interested in telling a story than any of the multitude of issues. Your best bet would be if you are yourself a tattoo artist, with not just the artistic skills but the safety training and access to safe & professional instruments. I've heard that there are some artists who've done work on themselves.
Anything else, and you're likely to find the situation that Mika describes - very high chance of bad art, even higher chance of infection or other nastiness. Sterilizing equipment is not as easy as it's made out to be, especially now that we're breeding all of these superbugs.

I guess you could use a sharp point, tattoo ink would be best, but India ink has been used for years. Just make sure everything is sterile. Tattoo gun with a brand new sterile (sealed) needle is good. Learning how to put one together is all part of the whole thing. OK Get ready for some PAIN.............I'll post my new one as soon as I finish...I love doing my own because I know what I am using, be careful not to contaminate the ink or that can be trouble. And when you have enough of your own tats on your body(that you have done)...............you are a professional.

I did do this, twice. The old ink and needle way. Now I am happy to say I just got a professional cover-up on the largest one. I tried hard to do neat, clean lines and it just did not work. Not so much a safety thing (My Opinion Only) if everything is sterile, but the looks will not be there.

Just because you can, doesn't mean you should. If something is going to be on your skin for life, wouldn't it be beneficial to have a professional do it right the first time?
I have seen A LOT of homemade tattoos, and all of them were hideous. I have had all my work done professionally and the difference is night and day. And everyone I know that has given themselves a 'tattoo' has regretted it.

Yes, that is a way to tattoo yourself. Is it safe? No. Tattoos should ONLY be done by a professional tattoo artist...in a sanitized location with the proper tools.

the only people i know who can or should be tattooing themselves are tattoo artists. anybody else is just endangering their health and ruining their skin and making the tattooed community as a whole look shady which is a stereotype that we are trying to shun.

You can make all sorts of improvised tattoo guns. I worked at a prison for a couple of years and saw some pretty clever designs. Follow the link below and you'll have a tat gun that will give you professional results.
