Softwares will betray you unexpectedly, has the tendency to demand more resources, will take up lot of your time and yet might not deliver anything, might make you rip your hair off in agony, might make you wish you chose hermitage and more...

Yes, girls are well qualified for software engineering.

Serious answer: Gender is not the decisive factor for this profession. It is the aptitude, commitment and caliber that makes a person of any gender suitable for a profession.

I see no reason you can't do this if you want to. Beware however that the job prospects that were out there in the 90's are gone for the most part, and those that remain don't pay as well, as there is allot if global competition. You Will be competing with new 20 something graduates from overseas, and entry level wages are not what they used to be. Work hours wil be long as this is the culture in the software engineering field. This is now a global commodity profession, and wages are never going to be what they used to be in the 90s. If you really love programming, then go for it. You can make an OK living at it. I just want to ensure that you have realistic expectations when you get your degree. If this is strictly a financial decision, you could probably make more money in a trade without even having to invest in a 4 year degree.

I can't believe this question has been asked in this day and age! I thought we were over asking if a woman can do a "man's" job. Why wouldn't this job be suitable for a woman? Does she have to pee standing up?

I apologize for becoming upset. It's just that having been told as a teenager I couldn't do something because I was a girl (it was the 80's) and believing it, I don't want any other young woman making my mistake. A woman is no less smart, or hard-working, or driven, or capable than a man. Granted, there are some differences in strength, but women handle pain better than men. Do we count men as inferior because of it? I don't think so. Yes, the sexes are different, but "different" does not me unequal!

If you want to become a software engineer, do it. Don't ever let someone else tell you what your abilities are. They're almost always wrong.

Yes I think they are perfectly suitable to become software engineers.
It is much easier for women to become software engineers rather than enter other areas such as mechanical and civil engineering.

YES!!!

If this is a field that is personally interesting to the individual girl. Not all girls will qualify, though... Just like all boys won't qualify. Anyone wanting to be any type of engineer must be prepared educationally, and be willing to work hard.

Why not? There's nothing wrong with a female software engineer.
