hi there, as many of you know we are hoping to emigrate to queensland in Australia within the next 12 months. My son is 17 and once we get to Australia will aim to go to college for a year to study. he wants to know if he will be able to join and train in the Australian police? Or do you have to be Australian of origin to do this?

You do not have to be an Australian citizen but you must have permanent residency status. You can also be a New Zealand citizen. There is a lot of information about the Queensland Police service here:
http://www.police.qld.gov.au/join/recruitment/generalEntry/checklist.htm

The requirements would be much the same for any of the State police services or the Federal police.

Each state government runs it's own police force - New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland etc. There is no Australia-wide police, there is the Federal Police but their powers are very limited outside federally controlled areas. Each state has it's own police training college. They are all likely to welcome any recruit with a degree or diploma. Your son will need to be a citizen or perhaps a permanent resident - as previously noted.

You have to become an Australian citizen. Takes a couple of years. He could finish his education in the meantime.

If you're going to live in Australia, better bring your own water!
We have a major drought and water shortage!

Good luck!

your son should aim for a college/university degree if he wants to have a decent police force job. takes 3 to 4 years.
alternatively, if he has english?european? police force experience - even as a volunteer - it will help.
