It does not.

It is the basis of buddhism. Desire is seen as the source of suffering, the elimination of desire the route to nirvanah.

But western cultures do not try to repress desire - they just seek to deny it. Denying desire is seen as holy (which is irrational), but does not make you happy.

Human desire is most often misguided, misunderstood, and misdirected by false information. It's very immature to act on every human desire like a small spoiled child. Most of the misery is caused by inappropriate behavior.

Repression of human desires does not make people holy any more than standing in a garage makes people a car. The word "holy" means "set apart" for a special purpose, not some religious nut-case living in a fantasy world. God placed human desire in us so we could learn to control it, not repress it or deny it.

That's a bit misunderstood. Avoiding sex has nothing to do with being holy. And desire exists whether you engage the desire or not. As for it causing misery . . . it looks like engaging in them without care for the outcome causes a fair bit of misery itself (AIDS, etc.). The real reason behind this has more to do with preserving the calmness of the mind rather than avoiding pleasure.

If every man woman and child would act on all of their desires right now, society would totally collapse in that instant. God teaches us how to FULFILL our desires in a way that is responsible.

It usually makes them hypocritical, and express those repressed desires in unhealthy ways.

To be truly holy, you must be truly miserable. Your god requires suffering as proof of faith.

Happy, well adjusted people don't need a higher power to tell them if they are being good or bad.

Your if statement is invalid:

Repression of human desires does not make people holy.

Holy = unknown... that's it.

No people are holy.

Because they say it's better to be holy and miserable, than sinful and joyous.

The fear of hell, is greater than the joy of life.

...sigh....pitiful.
