Some people do and others don't. Banning religion is pointless as you cannot stop people believing what they want to. A more relevant question would be about the influence of particular religious groups on government policies, but in a democracy, even one as flawed as ours, people have the right to express their opinions, hold their beliefs no matter what others may think of such beliefs. It's called tolerance and respect.

No-one needs religion. It's not like food, it's more like smoking. People used to think cigarettes were good for them, too. Doctors prescribed them for a variety of ailments and you could buy them in chemist shops. No-one needs to smoke, but they do it, anyway, because it makes them feel better. I smoke, but I wouldn't want my kids doing it.
I hate religion, too.
It could be restricted, like smoking, or at least have it's privileged place in politics and society removed, but I don't think you can ban it.
I do think they should have their schools taken out of their control and their charitable status removed. Society has to stop tolerating the lie that Faiths should be respected. Like smoking, practising religion should be banned in public places. It should be banned from advertising and all related paraphernalia required to bear a government (mental) health warning.
RELIGION CAUSES PERSONALITY DISORDERS AND DEEPENS DEPRESSION. for example.

But I like my religion... lots of people like their religion. You know, when people are scared of spiders you tell them to go on the net and find out all they can about spiders so they won't be frightened any more, you try that with religion. It isn't just catholism you know, theres the Methodists (thats me!) the Baptists, the Lutherians, the Jews, the Sunni Muslims the Shi-ite Muslims, the Sikhs... you even have Jedi's, you can't hate all of us. Know go and do some research and if you still don't like us then come back and tell us why - with reasons and logic please.

I need Christianity! I don't need religion! and there is a difference.....religion is doing what is expected in a religious manner...following the religion to the letter...Christianity is following a pattern set by Jesus but living your own life within that pattern which allows a life without sin. I guess I still sin as all Christians do but at least I am trying to perfect me for God.
Best wishes, Mike.

People need religion when they cannot tolerate ambiguity and lack of knowledge.
Hence, at the most emotionally trying times, people will turn to faith that offers soothing thoughts, but really has no basis in reality other than the experience of being soothed.
However, because banning religion will simply make their practice more obscure (witness China's experience in trying to ban Faloong Gong) it is ill advised to try to do so. Restricting freedom does nothing to aid in increasing knowledge. It simply makes the restricted freedom more enticing.

it's something that we can cling to if we ever feel lost or helpless, religion gives us hope of something better, it is a way of realising our true feelings and teaches us only to be good, religious wars aren't caused by the actual religion, but by the people and the way they interpret it
