In Austin, TX yesterday, a hispanic man ran into a black 2 year old with his car (no serious injuries to the child) in an apartment parking lot. The hispanic man was subsequently dragged from his car and beaten to death by a black mob. Reports on numbers of people in the mob range from 5 or 6 to up to 20, with more than 300 people watching and no one acting to stop the beating. Should this be treated as a hate crime? If this crime was committed by whites, it would already be on CNN and the like, and we would definately be hearing the words 'hate crime' all over the news. Just want to know what people think.

I agree with you enamelcutter. Every crime should be a hate crime. Just like when someone pleads insanity for killing their child. Of course they're crazy, they killed their child. You have to be insane to do something like that. Murder is murder, regardless of who does it to whom (grammar?).

I think they should get rid of hate crimes all together. Isn't every crime a "hate crime". The way they use it now any interracial crime is eligible for hate crime. I seriously doubt they'll even catch the people that committed this crime though, so it won't matter.

No it shouldn't be a hate crime! We shouldn't even have hate crime laws. The mob should be charged with beating someone to death ..... aka murder. Let's not complicate the things that matter with those that don't

If the apartment complex consists of mostly blacks, then no, it's not racial. It's called probability. You need to know a little more about people than skin color and more about how different people band together.
Nobody knows the real story except those that were actually there and don't forget how the media works to hype up the story for our entertainment.

In order for a crime to be classified as a hate crime, there has to be more than violence of one ethnic group against a person of a different ethnic group.
Racial epithets being yelled at the victim would be good evidence that the crime was racially-motivated.

No, Hate crimes only apply if it is a crime committed by a white person against a black person. At least that seems to be the unfair way it has been used so far. If they are going to charge peole with thought crimes this seems to be a clear case of a hate crime.

Not only should it be charged as a hate crime, but everyone in that mob should be charge with vigilanteism. After all, they took the law into thier own hands, instead of calling the law enforcement officers.

I don't think it was the driver who was killed but the PASSENGER. When the crowd started beating up the driver, the passenger came to his defense and the crowd beat the passenger to death.
The driver had gotten out of the vehicle to see if the child was okay.
Everyone in that crowd should be sent to prison for murder. Vigilante justice should not be tolerated.
