Most dogs are protective of their food. They just need to keep the kid away when the dogs are eating. It's common sense.

Dogs are naturally very defensive over their food, so it really isn't Sonny's fault. But what you can do is train Sonny. Start off by giving Sonny a bowl of food, and then don't stick your hand in but use like a long bone or something that Sonny can bite. Once he starts to even snarwl or growl, you yell at him and tell him 'No'. You continually do this until Sonny learns that even though its his food, it can be taken away. We do this with our dogs. We have Akitas and we start when they are pups, so that you can reach into their bowl and they won't do anything but look at you. If Sonny continually attacks over his food and you have tried to teach him, I would recommend keeping his food bowl out of reach when people are there, especially kids, and only feed him when there is no one around to possibly disturb him while he eats. I wish you the best of luck!

Dogs need respect and when they are eating that means keep toddlers away from them! This is NOT the dog's fault, but the parents fault. It is common sense to keep children away from dogs or any animal for that matter they are eating. If these owners are not going to watch their child or their dog for that matter, then maybe Sonny the golden retriever should find a more appropiate home, without kids or with someone that has more common sense. All dogs love to eat and maybe now Sonny will be left alone when she eats.........

Unfortunately it's very common for dog to get aggressive about their food. Never forget that a dog is essentially a tame wolf and will defend it's food from "rivals" unless it is taught otherwise. It sounds to be like your sister needs to start taking her dogs to obedience classes. The classes will not only help to train the dogs but will also train her on how to handle the dogs. Your nephew sounds quite young, but he should also be trained on how to act around dogs so that occurrences like that don't happen again. Last thing, if the dog broke the skin at all make sure that the kid is taken to the doctor for a quick check up on the wound to rule out any complications.

If anyone should be put to sleep it's your sister and brother-in-law for allowing your nephew to crawl over to a dog that is eating!!!!!!!!!! The dog didn't attack you said he bit your nephew on the forehead. THat is not an attack.

I wouldn't suggest putting any dog down unless it is a must. In this situation the dog should have been told "No" when it happened and he should have been brought to his kennel if he has one and tell him "Bad boy". That should be nipped in the bud very quickly or it will get worse. Not to mention a child should not be around any kind of dog while he is eating. A dog has no best friend when it comes to eating.

Keep the child away from the dog when it's eating. The dog should have been taught to not be aggressive while eating when it was a puppy. I did this by sitting by my pup and messing with the food and her while she ate. Now she would move over for me and let me eat with her if I wanted to.

Dogs view children in the same way they view other dogs: as competition for food, toys and their place in the pack. Your nephew should be taught to respect the dog and the dog should be obedience trained and fed in his crate.

Sonny should be cured of his food aggressiveness before being around any children. Sonny is very food aggressive. He will not attack again...IF HIS FOOD AGGRESSIVENESS IS CURED. sonny is not dangerous, he just has a dangerous problem.

the owner should be put to sleep for not properly training their dog! It's the easiest thing to teach you puppy not to be food possessive (ie.trainer)!
I have a 85lb BMD and I have no concerns about touching his food/bones. We can do anything to him and he won't bite...because we trained him!
