To purchase a handgun, you must be at least 21 years of age, pursuant to federal law. For statutory regulations concerning underage persons possessing firearms, refer to Virginia Code §18.2-308.7, possession or transportation of
certain firearms by persons under the age of eighteen.
A person must be at least 18 years of age to purchase a rifle or shotgun.
Virginia law does not address age requirements for the purchase of ammunition. Federal law requires an individual to be at least 21 years of age to purchase handgun ammunition, and at least 18 years old to purchase rifle or shotgun ammunition.

it is not pronounced because of the fact there's no longer a state so you might purchase and own a handgun at 18. The minimum age is 21 in all states privately or in any different case. you'll be 18 and purchase a rifle or shotgun yet no longer a handgun. Yes it is in fact 21 (not 12 Michael) for handguns and 18 for rifles. but if you intend on carrying it concealed you need to get a Concealed weapons permit. Surprisingly enough, you can open carry on your hip with no permit what so ever. And Virginia also has what is called the "No declare law" which means that if you are pulled over and you are carrying a gun, you do not have to notify the officer. You can own one at 18, you just can't buy one till you are 21! If someone buys it for you it is not a crime for you or them as long as you are 18 and don't live in D.C.!
