Many athiests accuse Christians of being illogical in their thinking. They say this with great authority. Saying that Christians are illogical because they believe in something they can't see is an invalid statement because "logical" is a subjective term.

WHAT'S LOGICAL TO ME MAY NOT BE LOGICAL TO YOU!!

I think it's logical that there is a creator. And if you study the Bible in it's original languages taking into consideration historical context, the Bible is completely logical, too.

So, it seems to me that "illogical" is just a term to use to insult Christians. It makes about as much sense as calling them a "poopy head".

Any thoughts?

Very good point. I am a smart gal. I don't feel I'm Illogical. I am a Christian and have logic. When it comes to Christianity, "they" don't feel what we feel inside. They can't know because they haven't experienced what we have so in some ways that makes them a bit ignorant to the Christian experience. They are illogical because they blatently say there is no God when they have absolutely no facts to back it up. They just don't know or understand and will never be able to until they let their guard down to the holy spirit who brings us all truth. You shall know the truth and the truth will set you free.

I think you have it backwards. What i have noticed is many christians using the word "Logical" to try and make their belief in superstitions and fairy tales sound more well..... for lack of a better term...... logical. I've also hear christians use "illogical" quite a bit to talk about a universe without a creator. Logic is about facts, evidence... saying it is illogical to you because you believe there must be a creator is ridiculous because you have no facts to back up your logic. It's just a "gut instinct" you have that is shared by others who are just as illogical and superstitious as yourself.

Your comment is a perfect example. "I think it's logical that there is a creator." That is perfectly logical..... if you're talking about a watch, or a car, or a pie. It is not logical, however; to credit the creation of the entire universe in all it's vastness to some invisible supernatural deity that has never shown itself or given anyone any reason whatsoever to believe that it exists. (The bible is not evidence of anything more than some guys who had this story to tell. it is a storybook with no significant evidence to back up any of it's claims.)

There is a big difference between something being logical and something making sense to a person.

It makes sense to you that the universe has a creator, but it is not logical because there is no evidence whatsoever. Your life experiences, your "gut instincts," the bible, the existence of the universe..... none of that is proof of anyone or anything being a creator and thus it is not logical at all for anyone to believe that there is a creator to begin with.

Edit:
You can't prove that something DOESN'T exist, moron! Can you prove to me that the leprechaun living in my attic doesn't exist? I didn't think so! You don't see me running around claiming my magical attic leprechaun created the universe though.

First, there's no need for insults.
Second, although I agree with much of what you're saying, I disagree that logic is subjective. What appears to be logical might be subjective. Perhaps it would seem like I'm only splitting hairs, but I think there's an important distinction between the two. We all follow (or at least should follow) the same rules of logic or otherwise, we have no standard on which we can judge which arguments are valid.

In most cases, the word "logical" is just thrown in to bolster their argument. Pure "logic" in fact can yield different results based on what the starting assumptions are. Some people say that you may believe for things for which there is no proof and thus accuse you of being illogical. However, this ignores the fact that most of the things we accept we have no proof for, and certainly not the things that matter. You can't provide proofs for things like love or meaning . . . I defy a single person to prove to me that their life has any meaning . . . yet does this mean meaning in some form does not exist or that it cannot be felt? The truth is that all people are illogical to a certain degree, whatever your beliefs (or lack thereof). Very often you "feel" something and that is what you go on, even if all external considerations would seem to indicate otherwise. This can be either "illogical" or "insightful" depending on the end result. Saying you are illogical is just a way of trying to discredit you.

There is a contingent of people (myself included, however) who hold that they true measure of a person is not what they believe but in how they behave and treat others. It is my regarded opinion that if the effect of your believing in god is to refer to others who disagree (even if they are rude) as "dumbas s es" then I must say your belief in god does seem both illogical and uninsightful to me since all it is doing is causing you to behave in a crude manner.

OOOhh dumb a s s. That isn't insulting.

Define logic. You don't get to decide for the English speaking world the definition of Logic. Illogical means not logical. You god does not exist. He is not made of matter. What is logical. Is logical. Why can't you get that. Logic is math. It doesn't need anyone to validate it, it just is. 2+2=4. Do I need to believe in an invisible magic man to know that is true?

Logic is. God isn't, based on logic.

It isn't logical that there is a god. It is faith in the unseen and unknown. That is different don't confuse them

Nice bait though.

I'm an agnostic theist, but here are some examples of what I think is meant by this:

The logic of a creator is very subjective, but resurrection of the dead and the virgin birth are not logical. They both go against everything we know.

The Bible being the word of God is another one. The only reason people think that is because a) someone told them and b) the Bible says so. This is not logic, it's gullibility.

Add to this that so many people then ask questions like "if we came from monkeys, then why are there still monkeys," and we do not have a paradigm of logic. I do think it's hurled around as an insult a bit, but sometimes it's justified.

The content of the bible may be completely logical to religious people simply because they believe that it is the holy word of God. Because of this they do not get concerned if something in there really doesn't make much sense. But atheists and agnostics are firm believers in logic and thus do not subscribe to the same belief.

I don't see how being logical is subjective. And if you actually read the bible, it is extremely illogical. It's logical to you that snakes talked and walked upright, or that fruit on a tree contained all the knowledge of God? Or that bats are birds, and giants walked? That a woman turned to salt?

I don't use the word as an insult - I use it the way it's meant to be used.
illogical
adj.
1. Contradicting or disregarding the principles of logic.
2. Without logic; senseless.

Understand now?

You read aramaic? And ancient greek? And the languages that came before aramaic? No? Then how do you study the bible in it's original languages?

How can you, logically, account for the fact that what is considered moral today was all but a deadly sin 200 years ago?

Logic is not subjective. Logic is a straightforward chain of events. "If a, then b. If b, then c. Therefore, if a, then c."

Following your "logic" - if you study Gone with the Wind in it's original languages taking into consideration historical context, Gone with the Wind is completely logical, too. Oh my Gosh! Miss Scarlett was real! Huzzah. Makes the whole argument look just a little ridiculous, doesn't it?

I don't see how it's logical to believe science that will be different in 50 yrs and most of what is told to us now will be completely different....whats logical about that?

so my opinion on it, Its an insult. It's trying to prove that they are smarter, however when I am 60 yrs old, the same people knowing that everything today will be different then, Will still say they are more logical then the religious.

Whats so much more logical? I because I believe in God? Just because I can't see him, I believe he's there, I am an idiot?

Chances are if we were really in the same room, My Christian *** would blow them away in logic. Sorry...but I am quite smart.

Science--Changes, History--Does not.

When considering logic, you must consider everything. Not pick the one you like the best.
