I'm trying to shed a few extra lbs from my mid section, gain a little muscle, and tone up everything. I do about 30 mintues of cardio at the gym first then lift different muscle groups different days for about 30 min. I eat healthy and and get to the gym 5 days a week. Is this the best approach for what I am trying to accomplish?

Adequate, but don't expect miracles in a short period of time.

Lifting and cardio on the same day is sort of counter-productive. Do like 5 mins of cardio to warm up before lifting, but spend the rest of the time only lifting. By spending 30 mins cardio before you lift, you are actually tiring your muscles out before you even lift. Try to lift like 3 days a week, and cardio the other 2. Or reverse if your trying to lose weight more.

If you want to loose some weight but yet gain muscle you will have to concentrate on the right exercisez (cardio wise).

One of the best cardio excercises you can do is sets of short sprints vs. long runs. You perform boosts of sprints. You can also do 1-2 long jogs a week if you want. Ultimately you need to allow your body enough time to heal and rest so it can build your muscle so that means only lift about 3-4 times a week at max.

Be sure to eat plenty of protein.

I don't want to sound discouraging, but 30 minutes of weights isn't going to be enough to build, maybe just maintain. The cardio is great though.
