Not necessarily the main cause of hate so much as the main cause of conflict. Throughout history people have tried to force their religion onto others. Examples are rife. Not least the current world conflicts.

It is very easy to blame religion about the problems today because its in the highlight of your times, But hatred is caused my beliefs that are different from your own. It doesn't necessarily have to be religion, but people do use it allot as a way to justify their anger.

Religion has always been at the root of lots of things and war is one of those. But people hate things that they do not understand and do not care to understand about. Most religions have a common goal and that is to better ourselves for our final outcome. Many people have bizarre ways of getting there, and most don't take time to understand there ways. We rather hate then understand.

When there was no major religions people fought with one another over land, over fishing rights, over gaming rights, over possessions...heck Helen of Troy started a war!.
Greed and selfishness within families start wars..it always starts small and escalates. If they happen to say they belong to a certain religious organization that is their excuse.. but that isn't what starts them.

Too easy.

Yes.

I am an atheist and I believe life is important. I don't steal. I don't kill.

Yet, organized religion has very little difference from organized crime.

Racketeering, paying off public officials, whacking people who don't follow the rules, stealing from the weak.

Religion is not the source. The source is the Devil and our sin nature. People that don't have the understanding are in the world and the world hates God. Satan is the prince of this world and he will do what ever he has to, to keep you from seeing Jesus. If that means keeping man wrapped up in man made religion and then wars over their own man made religion. It keeps them away from the truth.
