so I had to leave my kitten at the vet today to get neutered. A friend of mine told me that he is going to be different when I get him back. Is that true? Because he is pretty much the most affectionate cat ever and I don't want that to change.

Some kittens do change after they get fixed. My kitten was one that didn't change. As soon as I got him home he was playing with my 6 month old kitten and more affectionate than ever. He always wanted to be by me whenever he was getting tired or when he was sleeping. The only thing that will change is that when you get him home he may be a little sore and very sleepy.

That shouldn't change at all! If anything, he will be even more affectionate. Think of all the benefits neutering provides for this little guy. No mating stress, no testicular cancer, etc. He will live longer, definitely. Good for you to have him fixed! My little boys who've been neutered came home from the vet in good moods, I've never had one that was unhappy and in pain, but they have a shot they can give that lasts for 3 days if you want to be sure. I did have one that blew out his stitches, then spent the day playing all over the house while he decorated every surface with his bleeding while I was at work...came home to what looked like a crime scene. I had to crate him to slow him down, but he kept busting himself open anyway. Then I put some clumping litter in his box, he sat on it and it glued him shut, not kidding here! Healing was unremarkable from that point, although I was skeptical. It was fresh litter I had used because I ran out of the other kind as he was bleeding into it rather a lot. Not that I am recommending this, folks, just relating a tale...

Your kitten will not be any different when you get him back. If he were at sexual maturity and doing the aggressive mock-fighting play young males do to practice for future catfights, you would see that behavior gradually die back over the next 2 to 3 weeks as the testosterone levels decrease in his system. But it doesn't sound as though he has reached sexual maturity yet and is not exhibiting those behaviors.

Is your friend male? Men/boys - human males -- sometimes have a hard time with neutering male pets, and maybe that is what you are getting from your friend.

Your kitten WILL be changed by this surgery. He will never spray urine on your fresh laundry when you leave it sitting folded in the basket. He will never come home shredded and bleeding from battles for access to a queen in heat. He will never be exposed to feline AIDS from blood and vaginal secretions. He will never practice death bites on your arm when you play with him. He will have an average life expectancy of 15 years, rather than the 4 year life expectancy of the roving whole male.

And he will always be the sweet, gentle little guy you dropped off this morning for a procedure so simple it takes only minutes from beginning to end.

Tell your friend to chill.

No, he will not be different. I have 2 cats, one neutered and the other spayed and they are very affectionate! You are doing a great thing. It will be good for his health!

he may be different for a little while because he will be sore and scared. i think after a few days he should back to his old self again. i ve never heard that they change after being neutered. he knows u love him and u care for him so he wont change. he ll still be the same loving cat good luck!

when he first gets home, he'll be a little lazy do to the stitches. But as long as those heal fine, he'll be back to normal in no time!

I had about 13 cats over the course of time and all of which were fixed. After the given time for their stitches to heal, they were the exactly the same as before. (minus going into heat and what not)

He should be just fine. I have never noticed a change in affection after neuter/spay. He may be more quiet than normal for a day or two. Don't worry.

He will be groggy and or slow for a few hours to a day or so from the anesthesia. He may want to be left alone until he feels better. After that he will be back to his normal loving self.

Thanks for neutering him. It's the best way you can show your love for him.

Don't worry: That won't change. He might be a bit confused about why he feels different, and he might want extra attention. But that's it. I've had a number of kitties fixed, and never seen any bad outcomes from it.

he may be a little off with you for leaving him but after that there shouldnt be a problem when neutered they become more mellow, but watch out for weight gain
