There is a site a came upon that says if you are running Vista Home Basic you can go into the registry, change two values and you can use aero. Has anyone tried this and is it safe to do?

That is news to me. This could be very dangerous to do - any changes in your registry are risky at best - and done with a backup first. Besides, Aero requires minimum specs to run right - such as RAM on the motherboard and video card.
I would stay clear of this - you could add up with a disaster.
