A file separating in a tooth is a common occurrence. It is not a sue-able offense. For the situation to be considered sue-able you would have to show neglect/malpractice/treatment below the standard of care, and that is not necessarily so, and they referred you to someone who specializes in this, so that is also proof that they did note a problem and refer you to someone who could possible rectify the matter. If your dentist was not able to finish the root canal he should not have charged you full price, only for the work he did. If you cannot afford a root canal with a specialist have the tooth extracted and move on. Let this also be a lesson well learned that root canals should only be done by the specialists that do this kind of work all the time, all day long and are most likely to do the best job.
I'm surprise that if you could not afford the root canal how could you expect to afford the crown?? A plastic temporary crown is just that, temporary and they will break easily. If there is a temporary crown placed to begin with your dentist was obviously expecting the need for a permanent one in the near future.
The tooth portion exposed is not an issue, that is not causing your pain. Get the tooth taken out and the sooner the better

First, you need to do whatever it takes to get that tooth taken care of. If you have an infection (which I would bet you do), the infection can affect your heart.
The other reason to treat infection is that no pain reliever will really fully work until you get the infection under control.
If your dentist broke something off in your mouth during a proceedure, his liability usually is pretty clear. The only thing I can think of to tell you to do is to call his office and fully explain what is happening right now. He may be willing to prescribe a generic antibiotic and something for pain. He may also be willing to let you pay him, over time, and with a discount, for all of the work that has to be done to finish the job.
When you are in pain like this, it is hard to think clearly. Believe me - I have had dental issues!!! If you need to , ask a close friend or family member to help you out with the phone calls.
If your dentist will not talk to you, I would call a lawyer or legal aid, and then see if there is any dentist in your city or town that has a sliding scale fee.
In the mean time - don't drink through a straw or smoke - or do anything to draw air into your mouth to irritate the tooth and gum. Head to a pharmacy or walmart and get some dental wax to put over the exposed part.
If nothing else works, call your regular doctor and explain the problem and see if he or she can at least give you a script for an antibiotic and something for pain.
Best of luck!

they should indeed pay the specialist to fix their error, but I doubt that will happen unless you sue them. If you cannot afford a crown, why did you get the root canal? You can always have the tooth pulled, for a whole lot less money, and at this point it is what I would do, because not only does it hurt, it is a huge risk for infection, and trust me, you don't want an infection that close to your brain.

Go lodge a complaint against this dentist to the Dental Association and Consumer Protection Association or whatever it is called in your country. For the sake of your health, go see a good and reliable dentist (go ask some friends who has seen one) immediately to extract that broken tooth and cure that infection, Tooth infection can travel to your heart and it can be detrimental to your health. Just beg or borrow from family or friend to solve this health problem first. What is more important than good health and being able to smile and sleep in peace?

That is very uncool of your dentist putting his mistake on someone else to relieve!! I do believe you have a law suit, but in the meantime,i would definitely call around and get a sooner appt. if you can, this is an emergency and you should not have to keep medicating yourself because he messed up! This actually angers me. (It was the file that broke off).
