I'll bet this Susan on here has NEVER encountered a Doberman!!!! They are far from being dumb!!! Dobermans are VERY intelligent!!! They have tremendous strength & stamina, they are fearless, assertive & very protective of their home & owner.Very devoted, loyal & affectionate, but they are not a good dog for a novice owner!!As for the after care of an ear crop it takes month of retaping & the owner really has to be very consistant with doing so. Here is a few sites that will explain the breed a little further http://www.thedoberman.com & http://www.breederretriever.com/dog-breeds/134/doberman-pinscher.php & http://largedogbreedz.com/large-dog-breeds/doberman-pinscher & http://www.dobermanclub.org/Buying_Puppy/ears.html

My uncle used to raise and show Doberman pinchers. And friends of my daughter had a pair. They're actually a very nice dog as long as they're well trained. I was surprised by the pair in particular because they were unbelievably quiet and would just come up to me and sniff then walk away.

Their ears aren't that big of a deal to care for that I know of. It's the dogs with long, floppy ears like Cockers that have ear cleaning problems.

The one problem my uncle had was his red Dob developed a serious rash on her back, lost the hair and couldn't be shown in the ring for quite a while. After hundreds of dollars spent on expensive vet shampoos, his mother convinced him to try Head and Shoulders and the rash cleared right up.

If you can handle a big dog and are willing to take it for obedience training, from what I've seen they appear to be a fairly nice dog.

They are the most loyal, sweet, loving, clowny, soft, intelligent, easy to train, easy to care for dogs, i have ever come across. I have been fostering large breed dogs for a local rescue organisation in my town, and i can tell you with all honesty, that i have never had a doberman to foster that i didnt want to keep, and they usually handball all the dobes to me because they know i wont give up on them. They are really worth the effort, not that it really is much effort. I currently have 2 dobes myself, one was a rescue from a mill that had never been socialised with people, she was 4 when i got her, she is now 7, and the most loving friendly dog anyone will ever have the pleasure of knowing. The other is 4 years old, i have had her from puppyhood, has a mass of health problems due to ignorant, poor, greedy breeding, but i love her and my 2 kids love her to pieces.

I have to admit i know nothing about the care of cropped ears as it has been illegal in Australia for a while, but if you are worried about caring for cropped ears, dont get it done, they still look great anyway. Get your dobe from a registered breeder with plenty of references, and has lots of health guarantees and tests. Dobermans do have a lot of inheirent problems, mostly skin problems in fawn or blue dobes, but any good breeder will be aware of these problems and would be trying very hard to eliminate them from their blood lines.

They are lovely dogs. I adopted my brothers dog. It took a week for her to get used to stay at our house. But she is a very good dog. Good with children very play full. Yes they are loyal dogs, when they took you on as an leader the dog will sorry to say but only listen to that person. The ear care I am not so sure what you mean - but you don't clip the ear, only the tail is. The ears naturally stand up straight. It is not hard to deal with them very easily if you learn them they way you want them to be. Tiekie is now with us 4 years and I never had one problem with her. She is worth bothering with.

If you rank all the qualities a dog can possess a Doberman will be at the top or near the top in every category. Someone once said that the Doberman Pinscher is the "Cadillac" of dogs. Most people who have owned Dobermans will agree... There are many other good breeds of dogs... and then there are Dobermans... "the dog of dogs".

My daughter has a doberman. He is the kindest, most gentle dog. He is very loyal, especially toward Amy. She chose not to crop his ears and he looks great.

We had doberman pinchers when I was younger. They were gentle and very devoted. When you say ear care are you referring to the "clipping" of the ears? They also have their tails clipped. I don't remember my parents having any trouble with them after having this done.

Dobies are good dogs and very loyal, but they require a strong, experienced owner to socialize them and train them correctly. The ears present no problems.

But I recommend a retriever for most inexperienced owners, because they are intelligent, fairly tough, and forgiving of mistakes.

In contrast, it is difficult to "untrain" mistakes that you make with timing or socilization of Dobies.

Your definatleu not ready for this kind of dog. Get a book and research breed. Pick a dog based on temperment and activity level.
