It's usually the case because in the English-speaking world, we read left to right.

In comics in other languages (those in which they read right to left), dialog is usually started by the person on the right.

...By the way, there are English language comic panels in whcih the character on the right speaks first, and when that's the case, that character's dialog bubble will be on top, because we also read top to bottom.

It's because we read from left to right. I guess in Hebrew comic strips they go the opposite. Interesting, though. I have a lawyer friend who told me that in criminal trials when the defendant is on the stand, that if he or she looks to the left when answering a question, it is taken by the jury as a sign of guilt. Or, in the case of a prosecution witness testifying against a defendant, that if they look to the left, a jury will infer they're lying against the defendant and will find for the defendant in their verdict. He says it happens alot, and is one of the best kept secrets of court room drama.

Maybe they don't. That is the part YOU read first. And the reason you read it first is because in English we read from left to right. If the comic were in Hebrew or Arabic it would be the other way 'round.

In English, you read from the left of the page to the right. So it makes it easier to follow the flow of word ballons if they also go from left to right.

If you read Japanese comics, the word balloons will flow from right to left, to match the reading habits of the Japanese language. Often American printers will "flip" the Japanese comics so that they can go left to right with the wording.

Not true in Japanese comics.

In American comics the person on the left speaks first because we read left to right.
