I have pondered this myself, and the only explanation I can come up with is this:

Suppose you blindfold a group of people, and then you hand each one of them a different piece of fruit. If you ask each one of them to identify what they have in their hand, individually they will say something different. But if you then tell them to remove the blindfold, they will all say that the item is fruit. In the end, they will reduce the specifics to a general category that allows them to ignore glaring contradictions in order to be accurate. They don't compare the difference between apples and oranges, they just call it fruit.

And if that still doesn't work, if someone points out that the bible specifically mentions peas and carrots, they will look at the fruit in their hand and identify it as "food".

How irrational is it to agree to argue about a book you don't believe the contents of which anyway? "Mein Kampf" may have had some interesting points to be sure, but I just happen to not agree with any points made by a nazi or their avowed hatred of jews, so I merely excuse myself from the conversation if and when it ever comes up for discussion. It's called "manners", among other things.

It's irrational to claim that people are trying to "prove" their faith. Faith is belief in something without proof. www.dictionary.com.

Christians use the Bible as a guide and believe that it is divinely inspired. That itself means different things to different Christians. Some Christians think it means that every jot and tittle is true and literal and dictated to certain men by God word for word. Others believe that "inspired" doesn't necessarily mean that God "dictated" the Books, but rather the people that wrote it received spiritual guidance or were filled with the Holy Spirit when writing. They also allow for metaphor, allegory, etc. - and are not so rigid in interpretation.

There are many schools of thought. Hence, many denominations and many changes over the millenia.

Reality is just a point of view. Quantum physics tells us so. So why are Christians bashed for theirs?

In all likelihood, for the same reason a person who doesn't believe in it chooses to harp on it over and over again. If you don't believe in the Bible or Christianity, it's pretty darn irrational to continue to ask questions about it and expect to get any meaningful answers. It seems that atheist or xian, irrationality is a part of ourselves that we just can't escape from.

I don't think christians are on here to prove a point but many of them in reality have been transfomed by the word of God. They have had a positive life changing experience because of God and they cannot deny the power and the presense of that encounter. I heard a man recently say that God reduce his prison time from a forty year sentence to four years. He went into the system angry, and faithless but now he is a free man preaching the gospel of Christ.

When trying to *prove* anything, it is useful to place your argument in a context that is difficult to disprove. In your question you say (I will paraphrase) that using a book (I will assume you mean the Bible) is irrational. You go on to say that no one agrees on this book as a proof of its irrationality. Therefore by using this book, Christians must be irrational. You have a critical flaw; while denominations may disagree on certain criteria within the Bible, as a whole Christians believe Christ is the path to salvation. Also, as a whole we agree that the Bible is a message to us from God. Thus you have a critical flaw in your argument and it breaks down.

It's only irrational to those who don't/can't/won't believe. To say that 'no one agrees on' the Bible is an erroneous statement, since most Christian denominations agree on the important aspects of the Gospel.

Some-body has to play "their part"
of two parts: "their part" vs "your part",
with one such part being the "contrary part"

http://www.godshew.org/ContraryThings.html

But hey, isn't atheist vs xian also a silly sides war;
And what's War good for? Asolutely Nothing!

http://www.godshew.org/Peace.html

So, why don't atheists & xians stop the warfare,
atheists 1st if they're sow dog gone smarter than xians
xians 1st if they're sow dog gone smarter than ahteists
for a sides war makes both them vs them just like them.

Above such them vs them is "us-ward"

Let there be light = understanding = grace

GRACE(ONLY) with you all. Amen.

I believe in the bible. I also don't feel like I have to prove anything to anyone. My relationship with God is a very personal one. I know that He is real, that is all that matters.

Who exactly doesnt agree? History scholars and archaeologists alike have been surprised many times when actual proven events are outlined to the T in the bible.

If you are not a believer, then you wont believe. Its nothing to get nasty about, it just means you're not meant to believe, nothing more. You're doing exactly what you were created to do. Not believe.

Its better if we all do what we were made to. You dont believe, and others will. We dont have to hate eachother, its uncalled for.
