I believe that God knows our hearts, I believe that He knows the details that would take us to a decision to leave a spouse for negative reasons. With adultery, still let God lead, with desertion, let God lead, and yes, with abuse, let God lead. I dealt with adultery in my first marriage, and the guy also had problems that led him to jail. I also dealt with abuse, physically and mentally from this same guy and I was the one that ended up take a trip to the mental hospital....God does not take his hand off of us when He has it set for us to belong to Him. I praise God for all I endured, run to Jesus let Him give the directions needed....be blessed!!!

Yes, a Christian may seek a divorce for other reasons. Despite the fact that some Christians will say otherwise, a Christian has freedom of choice on every matter in life. The Apostle Paul said;

"Everything is permissible"—but not everything is beneficial. "Everything is permissible"—but not everything is constructive." 1 Corinthians 10:23

Christians are to be led by the Spirit as they follow Jesus Christ. Those who would try to turn the words of Jesus into a new set of rules/requirements are totally missing the intent of his message. The words Jesus spoke were intended to wake up the calloused hearts of those who were listening...not to create a new set of legalistic rules (as we see in many churches today).

There are many different reasons/scenarios where a Christian may choose to seek a divorce. The bottom line is that we should examine our own hearts and attitudes as we seek God's guidance in the decisions we make. If our motives are based solely on selfishness, lust, etc...then it is wrong. God intends for marriage to be a blessing, but it takes two people committed to that covenant to realize that blessing.

I knew a woman who was mentally, emotionally, and physically abused by her spouse. She was in a legalistic church where she was being told that she didn't have "biblical grounds for a divorce". What a bunch of rot. That church had perverted the words of Jesus into a set of legalistic rules that entrapped her in a harmful and dangerous situation. Her spouse had repeatedly and willfully abandoned his end of the marriage relationship. Anyone who thinks that she had "no choice but to remain in that marriage" is a religious zealot, and they have no understanding of the words and life of Christ...

Look at my avatar's property -- the HP shown there contains a link about that. The subject is simply "sex."

I have tried to keep myself to scriptural reasons. And it is my conclusion that the Bible gives reason for divorce in cases where the practice of domestic abuse occurs.

For more read the subject page mentioned. It's in the third partition.
(perhaps search for bythebible page)

God does not expect anyone to have to live in a abusive way, Just as long as the reason is valid, Then that innocent person can leave. But they should try to work things out first.

Emotional or physical ? The bible condones poor treatment of women. So, unless one spouse kills the other, the "god" of the bible really doesn't care how bad they're treated. If any xians disagree, go read your bible again before sending me a hate email. It's just the way things were back then. Society has evolved in most parts of the world.

2384 Divorce is a grave offense against the natural law. It claims to break the contract, to which the spouses freely consented, to live with each other till death. Divorce does injury to the covenant of salvation, of which sacramental marriage is the sign. Contracting a new union, even if it is recognized by civil law, adds to the gravity of the rupture: the remarried spouse is then in a situation of public and permanent adultery:

If a husband, separated from his wife, approaches another woman, he is an adulterer because he makes that woman commit adultery, and the woman who lives with him is an adulteress, because she has drawn another's husband to herself.

Domestic abuse? If it's physical, sure, that would be a good reason.

Christians divorce all the time, as much if not more than non-Christians. Can doesn't come into it. If you're getting beat up, kill the guy or get divorced. Personally, I'd kill the guy and make it look like self-defense.

Yes. They can divorce on whatever grounds the law of the land says is OK to divorce for.
