Meditation will be much useful.

Continous prayers for others welfare also do a lot good to control our mind.

Initially sit for half an hour morning and evening.

Continously think on some divine name or sound.

Practising like this, you will know how to avoid unwanted thoughts and divert your mind from recurring thoughts.

Then watch your thoughts moving here and there.

Dont get attached to those thoughts.

ie you are replying or following thoughts, not allowing secondary thoughts.

But this is not enough.

Then slowly try to watch your mind while you are talking with someone or doing something.

Make this an habit for all the time except sleeping.

Normally for a person before he act, first thoughts will come, then word, then action.

For a normal person this whole thing happens very fast.

You give a small intervel between the thought and word, and again between word and action.

By practising like this you will not utter a single even sound without your permission.

Meanwhile you will come to know about your mind how it creates, manipulates a simple things into a big problem which can
be solved easily.

If you are able attain this stage,
you will reach a stage where there is no thoughts, no mind yet you are conscious.

Here you get bliss or ecstasic state.

All these can be very difficult, if you have
will you can attain it easily.

Dont think that this very complicated one but very simple one to follow.

You dont need to renounce the world but u can enjoy everything fully.

Life is not complicated as many think but very simple.

No aim to reach, nowhere to go.

Be here and now.

For all this, If you have a experienced one to teach u, then you can attain.

All mentioned above is from my experience
which taught by many masters.

Thanks for asking such a good question.

Mantra meditation or mindfulness meditation (zazen) a really nice book on the subject is "Mindfulness in Plain English" it is very accesible from a secular humanist point of view as well. I'm an athiest but I practice meditation because to me it is akin to a very effective form of cognitive therapy.

Meditation. Observing thought rather than getting caught up in it and then having a good yoga practice (for me) as it prepares my mind for meditation. A simple meditation: close your eyes and focus on your breathing. Inhaling say: In and Exhaling say: out. It's not easy but it's worth the effort. Om shanti.

Sounds like meditation would help, maybe just focusing in on one thing at a time too, resisting the urge to jump to a new topic

I have read that it's not only a monkey, but a drunken monkey who's just been stung by a wasp.

I meditate daily.
