It can be transmitted from person to person through droplets like sneezing, coughing, etc. If the infected person doesn't wash their hands properly after using the bathroom or wiping their mouth, and you come into contact with their hands (like touching the door handle after them), then you may contract it too. Basically from the infected person's fecal droplet (not washing hands properly), vomit (not washing hands after wiping mouth) and possibly saliva then you can contract it once you spread the germs by touching your mouth/nose/eyes. FREQUENT HANDWASHING WITH SOAP is the best way to prevent getting it, though, in my experience just staying out of the person's presence is the most effective way to prevent getting it.

If the "stomach flu" is contracted from contaminated food, then avoiding cross-contaminating (don't re-use an unwashed knife used to cut raw chicken). Washing hands frequently when handling raw meat, and assuring that all raw meat is fully cooked.

How To Get The Stomach Flu

viruses are not all respiratory, and actually few are air borne
most viruses are passed hand to mouth, so the most effective way to avoid contracting a virus is to wash your hands, frequently. I carry hand sanitizer (like Purel) with me at all times. I use it when I get groceries, both when I enter the store and when I leave the store, and I consciously avoid touching my face while in the store. Anytime I am out in public, I wash my hands frequently. I do not share drinking glasses or eating utensils at all, ever. When I fly, I never accept anything from the beverage cart other than a bottle of water that is still sealed, I wash the bottle before I open it. If the attendant has touched every one elses glasses etc, she is the primary vector for infection, so I do not accept anything open that I cannot wipe off before I open and drink it. I wash my hands every hour in flight with the hand sanitizer. By being careful to wash so frequently, I have avoided getting a virus for over five years now.

Most people that have what they call, the stomach flu are actually suffering from food poisoning. The Flu is a respiratory illness, seldom makes anyone vomit or have diarrhea.Food poisoning is quite common.Any one that gets "stomach flu" often should check their fridges temp. And look at how they are storing their food. You only have a 4 hour window that food can be kept outside of refridgeration. This includes the time it is being loaded to go to the store, time leaving the truck to the inside of the store, and the time for taking it home in your trunk and putting it away. Now, you have the time you have it on your counter, preparing it. These things in themselves don't pose the problem, what happens next is people cook their food and leave it on the counter or stove for an hour before they put it away. 1 single bacteria starts to grow and in 24 hours you have 2 billion bacteria. And it will continue to grow even if you put it in the fridge. The next day they have leftovers and anywhere from 2 hrs to a week later, they are sick as can be with "Stomach Flu" or they blame it on the last restaurant that they ate at. Needless to say cool your food down as fast as possible and keep it in the fridge to thaw it,and never leave food sitting outside of the fridge.
