I have to go to a birthday party and the invitation says "dressy evening casual." I'm not sure what that implies exactly? I don't want to show up over or under dressed.

I would wear a skirt that is a little dressier than what you would wear to the office (maybe is a pretty paisley or has a big sash) and pair it with a silk blouse or a dressy cardi/twin set. No panty hose and pretty dress sandals and matching purse/clutch.

For guys, I would recommend a pair of dress khaki's, blue blazer and a oxford cloth shirt - but no tie. Wear a pair of bucks or loafers.

well, that is the most awkwardly put dress code I have ever heard! But I suppose it just means make an effort, but not too much! Maybe a nice dress, or skirt and blouse, or smart trousers...but nothing over the top - no evening dresses, or ball gowns.

If its a birthday party, dress codes are rarely taken very seriously in my exerience, so wear something you feel comfortable in!

What is dressy casual? No one knows for sure because ‘officially’ there is no such term!

Dressy Casual calls for dressed-up versions of casual looks. For him, it could be trousers and a sportcoat, for her a dressy pants look. Jeans, shorts, T-shirts and other casual looks are not appropriate for Dressy Casual.

Dress pants or slacks or a nice skirt and pair it with a pretty blouse. Something like if you were going out to eat at a really nice restaurant. No jeans, no mini skirts, no tennis shoes, etc.

Probably just like a skirt and a nice shirt or something. I'd type it in a search engine and go to images.
