Siberians are great dogs. They generally get along very well with people. We've had them for years, and they're one of my favorite breeds. However, there are some down sides. 1. They periodically blow their coat, and shed huge amounts of fur. You have to groom them frequently, or vacuum a lot. 2. They are not watch or guard dogs, so don't expect them to behave that way. 3. They have to be kept in a secure enclosure like a kennel or well-fenced yard. If they get out, they tend to run (remember what they were bred to do) maybe for miles, and have no idea how to get home. If you don't want to lose it, don't let it run. Some are pretty good escape artists. We've had one that could climb a chain link fence like it was a ladder, and another that was an expert at tunnelling under. 4. They are not the easiest breed to train - they are very intelligent, but are very idependent and don't always take to it well.
Before getting any breed of dog, study it and learn as much as you can about it to make sure it's the one for you. Visit the breed club's website - they will have a lot of information there to help you decide.

Take your time. Go to the local shelter and get a good mix. Lab mixes are wonderful.
If you are getting a puppy, make sure to socialize it and go to puppy class with it. This is a great bonding experience for you both, and the pup will have a great outlet.
Crate train. (one hour per a month of age plus one is the longest they should be expected to hold it)
Get a male and have him neutered. He will be very loyal and they can be so much easier to train.
Check out the Ultimate Puppy Toolkit... it is a lifesaver when you get a puppy.
Try to get a puppy that is between 8 and 12 weeks old. If taken from their litter mates before 8 weeks, it can cause some problem.
My brother-in-law has a labradoodle (mix between a standard poodle and lab). He is a great dog. Very smart and good tempered.
Best of luck to you.

I love Siberian Huskys. I have wanted one for years to but my parents say that the dog that I have now is enough. Some different big dogs that you could possibly look into are:
~ Alaskan Malamute
~ Bernese Mountain Dog
~ German Shephard
~ Greater Swiss Mountain Dog
~ Irish Setter
~ Greyhound
~ Newfoundland
~ Wolfdog
These are just a list of larger dogs that I find to be very good companions.

Redbone Coonhound, they are great dogs and generally no health problems with the breed. You could visit dogbreedinfo.com they have alot of information on all breeds and they tell you about their temperment and everything. It is a great website for trying to figure out the best dog for you. You could also visit the pound, they have great dogs and most of them have been trained or are in the training process, also the dogs at the pound have had their shots and are fixed. These dogs are usually mixed breeds. Mixed breeds normally live longer and are overall healthier then purebreds. If you are looking for a puppy and maybe want to rescue go to petfinder.com and look at puppies around your area that need a good home. Good luck with your search, I am sure you will find a great dog.

If you are looking for a large dog, my suggestion is that a German shepherd is the best...I have one for the past 8 years..they are the kind when trained and socializes make the best of pets...You can leave them in a house without any fear of damage done to your home when you come home...They are good pets to take on walks and are very loving and intelligent too..
My understanding of huskies that they are known to chew a lot and I have known people to have them and come home with good furniture and stuff demolished...
I don't think you would go wrong with a German Shepherd, and get it from a puppy and train it yourself or have it professionally trained..We trained and socialized ours ourselves,,don't get one that is several months or years old..as you do not know how they were treated and they could have aggressive behavior in them
Good Luck

I have a Golden Retriever and she is the most playful, loyal, smart, and beautiful dog I have ever owned! I have always been a dog lover and have had many dogs in my life. I believe you should go to the pound and pick a dog that is right for you. You will be surprised how many pure bred dogs are at the pound too. It doesn't matter what breed or mix you select as long as you love the dog. He will love you back ten fold! Good luck!

I had a siberian husky years ago....great family dog, loveable but since then, I became a parent to 2 German Shepherds and I'm so taken by them, I'll never have another breed. They are so loving, smart, clean and great protectors. Yes, they need training and you must be the alpha with them but they are the greatest. I actually never wanted shepherds but my husband brought one home, I went and got another one and we had a litter. We lost the daddy but now I have mom and her son....and a long hair is like a big teddy bear...lol They love to be part of the family and are great with kids too. JMHO

my next dog will be a large one as well, right now i have a 2 dogs German Shepard and mix breed, I'll tell you the hair from the German Shepard is unbelievable, i lover her like she was my child but the hair is out of control so you have to decide on long or short hair as well.
i was leaning toward a mastiff, but had changed my mind and figured a doberman would be nice too, and don't forget animal shelters may have mixed breeds but sometimes they make the best and they need a home too.
good luck

Be sure you have the time and space to see to it that a large dog gets enough excercise for the breed. You might want to check with your local SPCA or animal shelter to see if there's a dog up for adoption that suits your personality.
Generally those facilities give the animals thorough examinations prior to their adoption. This is not always true with dogs from other sources.

i agree with you that a husky is good choice but since you probably already know the good things , i will go with the things that you should know: 1. they could get pretty big and active so make sure you give them plenty of things to do and play with. 2. all breeds have one or two health
problems so make sure you get info about the
husky you are getting 3. look in the shelter first, there are plenty of pups looking for homes and you could by getting one, be saving her/his life.
