Every year in the beginning of summer, I always get flies swarming around my fruit. What we usually do is go out to the local store (they should have them in your usual pathmark or shoprite etc.) and buy fly paper. It's basically a ribbon of sticky paper that hangs down in a spiral (it's about a foot and a half long) and you can just hang it anywhere. The flies are attracted to the sweet smell, but once they touch the fly paper, they stick until they die.
The downside of fly paper is that it's sticky and therefore annoying to open up. It's also not the looker.. but I don't imagine a basement is a place of utter beauty.
Fly paper is your best bet.

Well we live in the country and flies are a problem here too. What we do is take a old milk jugs fill them with about half way with H2O and add a little sugar or hamburger. They will fly into the milk jugs and can't get out. After you have a couple of them in the water more will join them. You can place them just inside your door or just in front of the door of you bf parents. You when there are a lot of them just throw it away.

Flytraps: Fill a soda bottle 1/4 way with water and 1 teaspoon sugar the flies fly in and get trapped (then toss the bottle and repeat) - or buy commercial fly strips flies get stuck (be sure to place them where you won't have to touch them they are extremely sticky and not attractive but very effective). You could buy the home a Bug Zapper and place it outside the backdoor that way the bugs are zapped outside and you never have to deal with them inside at all.

Try hanging clear plastic bags full of water outside the door where the flies get in. The reflective properties bother flies and they tend to steer clear.
Replace the door or screen with one that shuts automatically.
