I have an 8 year old female terrier who has become incredibly stubborn about going outside. She frequently refuses to go outside unless she is carried or pulled and then getting her into the yard is impossible. It has gotten so bad that she won't go outside and then 2 minutes later she either poops or pees on the floor. Could doggie prozac or something help? Could this be a medical problem or just stubborness?

With an older dog, the first thing that I would do it take her to the vet to make sure that she is healthy. Have her eyes checked to make sure that she is seeing correctly. I would then consult a good animal behaviorist about this problem.

Since spending money on the vet is a possibility try a collar thats called "GENTLE LEADER" There is a DVD regarding how to use this. Remember, treats are always a great "retraining" program. I also think you need to be observant about where you take your dog. Are other dogs going there? Are you in the woods were its likely wolves are around? Male Wolf Urine will make most dogs cower over the idea of approaching an area where a male wolf was. With the collar that I mentioned, retraining will make things easier, be patient and reward often.

maybe the dog is scared of the outside. I would get the wee wee or piddle pads and keep them in the house then move them every day closer and closer to the door. check cesar milan's website too. http://channel.nationalgeographic.com/channel/dogwhisperer/episodes.html
