Could a supreme intelligent being create the fifty billion galaxies each with two hundred billion stars, then rejoice in the smell of a burning goat's flesh?

It just doesnt make any sense to me. You clearly see throughout the book of numbers that god is "pleased" with the aroma of burning animal sacrifices. Why would such a grand being be pleased with something like that?

Brilliant observation. But it is pointless to closed minds. Like JP said, humans always ascribe to God their own cultural and social attributes and try to force such doctrines down everyone's throat.

Because none can barbecue a goat like a bunch of fanatics. There is something about the aroma that's truly sublime. Perhaps god can create galaxies but when he tries to make barbecue goat it ends up tasting like chicken :P

1) Of the many many works this God has done the human being was the most important
2) It is important to God that we praise him and love him (mainly because it is gratifing to us), and therefore he'd be very pleased if someone would sacrifice the best part of the result of his work to God.
3)Remember, this only makes sense (in a christian view), if observed as a "symbolism" that represents what later happened with Jesus's sacrifice on the cross to redeem us of our sins

English is not my native lenguage, so because of lack of vocabulary the text migh have turned out confusing. Still remember, its theology were disscussing here.

God was not pleased with the aroma of burning goat flesh. He was pleased that someone obeyed Him and offered up a goat as sacrifice. It is like we give up something we love to please God. For instance we can give up a favorite food. Or say For you God, I will give up smoking or drinking!

God didn't write the bible, man did. Man discovered that cooked meat tasted better than raw meat. Cooking meat kills parasites, man was also pleased about that. Man also enjoyed the smell of roast beef cooking, and was pleased by the aroma. Live stock was money, so it was a sacrifice to kill an animal to eat it.

The same question that was asked of Job in Job 38:4 is appropriate for you: where were you when God laid the foundations of the earth? He is the creator of the universe, and it doesn't have to make sense to you.

You say, "something like that" as if it's a terrible thing. Just because the smell of burning flesh is disgusting to you doesn't mean it's disgusting to someone else.

Good question. And you have some good company as well. Jesus himself said "I will have mercy, not sacrifice." I think he was quoting some old scripture.

He also overturned the benches of those who were selling doves for sacrifice. It was a repulsive idea to him as well it seems.

God loves barbecue.

A grand being would be pleased with something like that because of what it means. The underlying meaning is what pleases him.
