I have a visa debit card also. It does not work as a debit card in retail establishments in Canada, but can be used as if it were a credit card. I have to sign for stuff when I use it, and cannot use a pin.
I do use the card at ATMs also in Canada. I have found that I cannot use it in small ATMS, like in convenience stores and hotel lobbies, and, alas, Pearson Airport, but can use it at most of the Banks in Canada (including RBC, CIBC, TD, BMO and some credit unions) with no problem.

Four digit pin in the U.S. and Canada. If it has zero's in it. You may need to change that.
Now to correct some posters.
If it a Visa Debit card. You would tell the merchant credit, even if a notice pops up on his/her screen saying debit. That this card needs to be run through the credit card system except in Toronto, Canada they are testing chip & pin. So, some merchants it might work with a pin. Otherwise, you will sign for your purchase.
There are some merchants who do take debit card with these logos Maestro, Cirrus, Plus aks Visa plus. If you card has those label it will work as a pin purchase.
Just for info if the card has a interlink symbol it will work on the Visa Plus system or at least it should.
I think you get better rates using your debit card in Canada, than a Credit Card.
Just inform your bank that you will be using your card in Canada. It will have a less chance of it being blocked.

I work in a couple restaurants and I have started to see these Debit/Chip cards usually from people from the UK. At one of the places I work at there is a brand new machine that accepts this technology and will allow you to use your card like a Debit card and will require a PIN number to use it. These new terminals will not let you use your card unless you have the PIN and from my understanding it is the same PIN you had before. At the other place I work we still have an old machine and they allow you to use the card without the PIN and appears just like a credit card would requiring just a signature.

If your card has a visa symbol or interac symbol on back, then all you have to do is use credit and sign for it. You can do this anywhere in the world. I dont really understand your question fully... If you have a visa debit card like i do, then you can use your pin in Australia, as well as credit. You cant use your pin overseas when purchasing, however, if you want to withdraw money from an ATM overseas, you need to select credit, upon which you will then be asked for you pin.

You can use your debit card in Canada, if the establishment allows it. However, I would advise against it, as you will typically be charged a fee on top of the purchase price for making a debit transaction. Credit is the best way to go while in Canada (even moreso than cash), as when you get your statement, the banks will usually give you the best exchange rate between American and Canadian dollars. Furthermore, you'll have the safety of not carrying around wads of cash on your person, which can be stolen.

No problem, bar one. Many of the freestanding ATMs charge serious amouts for using them. Use the main banks or the shops.

No worries - safest to use it in a hole in the wall though and use cash!
