dont want to make a fool of myself at dinner, is it just like 'ar-a-ba-ta'?

In italian

a = ah, like the short o in lot (or close to it)
i = long e as in fleet
the consonants are about the same as english
double consonants mean to lengthen that consonant and emphasize the syllable that follows somewhat, but also the second to last syllable
