Unproductive coughing means you're not coughing up any phlegm; a dry cough. Nocturnal coughing means coughing at night when trying to sleep.

An unproductive cough is a cough where no phlegm or discharge is coming up of any kind and the cough continues and gets worse.

Anything "nocturnal" occurs at night. Coughing is often worse at night b/c the person is laying flat (is in a prone position). Sometimes nightime coughing can also become worse if the room is too hot, if the person is exposed to allergens in the bedroom, bedclothes or bed itself, or if they are sleeping in an air conditioned room or exposed to cold drafts.

Unproductive coughing is usually a dry cough that doesn't loosen up anything so that you can cough it up. Nocturnal coughing is coughing at night when trying to sleep.
