Yes. This is why I ONLY take acyclovir when I am having an outbreak, instead of every day like some people do. The medication can be taken either way - daily or when the person is experience an outbreak.

I tried to take acyclovir daily for suppressive therapy and it made me feel nauseous and light headed ALL day. I just felt like crap and not myself. I hated the feeling. So, I stopped taking it daily and now I just take it when I am experiencing an outbreak.

I'm SURE you are experiencing this from the drug. ALL drugs have side effects (some worse then others of course). The tiredness is probably from the herpes outbreak. I also feel very tired and just don't want to do anything when I am having an outbreak. If you can't handle taking the medication everyday (like me) then just take it when you are having an outbreak.

Good luck!

HSV 2 does not cause edema in the brain. It is a virus, tho, and your body fights it as it would any infection. Symptoms such as malaise, fever, aching are extremely common, even long term neuropathy. I take Acyclovir on a prn basis for shingles or Varicella and I don't notice a lack of concentration or inability to focus.I would discuss this with your doctor. Do you take 500 mg twice daily or 1 gram daily ?

I haven't heard of aciclovir causing those symptoms, but they are very common in the early stages of a large number of viral infections, possibly due to the virus itself or from your immune system gearing up to fight it.

I have little doubt an evolving outbreak of HSV could cause this in some people.

When you have a breakout it causes a degree of brain swelling. It is more so for some people than others. It is more likely that.
