If you have type 1? A long acting carb like a piece of toast. If you've got a problem with night hypos I know it sounds nuts but a glass of milk with a tea spoon full of corn flour really works well. If you're type 2 n not on inuslin, try something low carb like scrambled eggs or some nuts - cheese is carb free but is meant to give you nightmares! Hope that helps xx

Presumably, fitzy, you're asking this in the Diabetes section because either you, or someone you know is diabetic, and you either have hypoglycaemic attacks during the night that wake you, or you're suffering with the dawn phenomenon, whereby your blood sugar falls during the night, but you wake up with a high blood sugar. This would be due to your pancreas producing glucagon, which in turn stimulates your liver to release some of it's store of glycogen.
My answer to you would be to eat something like toast or porridge.
What you need is something to raise your blood sugar a little, and to maintain it over several hours, rather than to raise it for a short time and then allow it to fall again.

If you are a diabetic - a carb and a protein will help sustain you through the night. I suggest a piece of string cheese and a few wheat crackers, toast and peanut butter, cereal and a small glass of milk....just a few.

Try drinking warm milk, or an herbal tea like chamomile with honey. Both of these things will make you feel sleepy and will satisfy your taste buds.
If you have to eat something, vegetable or miso soup would be good. They are low calorie and not to hard on your digestion process.

I usually have a couple of slices of wholemeal toast if my blood sugar needs a boost before I settle for the night.
