My husband just got a job working right outside New Orleans, but I really don't want to live that close to the area. Anybody have any good locations that would be drivable for him, but still far enough away from the actual city? We were looking at Gonzales but I haven't really heard any great things about that area. Any help is definitely appreciated.

Slidell, Covington, Mandeville, Abita springs in St Tammany Parish are all great places to live. The higher priced homes will be found in the Covington, Mandeville area. Some of the Slidell area did flood during Katrina, however, much of Slidell was unharmed. Talk to the locals to find out which neighborhoods were unaffected. St. Tammany is one of the most progressive parishes in Louisiana. It has a great reputation for providing for the people that live here. The crime rate is low, and the parish officials are very community involved. The school system is also much better than most of Louisiana. There are plenty of community churches, clubs, and organizations to become involved with. Check it out before making a decision.

Ascension Parish, where Gonzales is located, is a fine area, but crowded with LOTS of traffic. Finding a place to live may be difficult in this area, as a lot of growth is going on. I live in Prairieville, just 5 miles from Gonzales. I have been here since right before Katrina when I was forced to evacuate. Traffic is a major concern, as there are lots of people living away from New Orleans and commuting since Katrina. You don't say where your husband will be working. What about St. Charles Parish, like Luling or Destrehan? Or you could go to Lutcher or Gramercy or Reserve. It would be a very good idea to stay on the same side of the river as your husband's job is, because traveling from one side to the other could be a real headache with traffic. If your husband will be working regular 9-5 hours, the traffic will be factor.
I would recommend looking for real estate agents in areas near New Orleans, like the ones I mentioned, and talk to them.

There is beautiful country across the Ponchatrain Causeway called the North Shore. It goes from suburban to very rural. Above that is goes into Beautiful horse country up into Folsom.
The term "North Shore" refers to areas that lie on the northern shore of Lake Pontchartrain, which is covered by St. Tammany Parish. The North Shore includes the communities of Mandeville, Covington, Madisonville, Abita Springs, Lacombe, Eden Isle and Slidell.

But there are some very nice communities in New Orleans Proper. Uptown, the garden district, French Quarter and the Marigny are all very nice and also safe if you are worried in regards to that.

My first home was in Mandeville, across Lake Pontchartrain from New Orleans. When I was there at least it was a nice quiet town. And don't worry about living close to New Orleans. Think about how long that city survived without anything happening. I'd like to think they can't let something like that happen to my city again. It's a beautiful place full of beautiful people.

I live in Prairieville...5 minutes away from Gonzales. Gonzales isnt a bad city at all. It's actually getting bigger with all the stores, shopping centers, and neighborhoods. The schools are great also, some overcrowding, so they are building like 5 new primary schools.

If you move to Gonzles, that would be about an hour to an hour and a half drive for your husband. I would considered moving to the Northshore if I were you, that would included Slidell, Mandeville and Covington. You could also look into Metaire, Kenner or LaPlace. Those are pretty nice places that are about a 30 min drive. Good Luck.

Hello, I use to live in new orleans up until i was eight year old. I still have family there that i vist. anyways, i reccommend that you dont not move to New Orleans. Things are really crazy there ever since katrina. The crime in New Orleans is even higher since the hurricane. Even before the hurricane they have one of the highest crime rate in the country. Me personally i would not live in Louisana at all. But since your husband has a job there maybe you want to try staying in Slidell, or the WestBank which is the calmer side of New Orleans. I went to New Orleans for Christmas and things are still not normal there. To me is was really depressing. I not trying to worry you but its the truth. It is a great place to visit, but living, be cautious.

Look for areas North of the city & away from the Gulf 'cuz when another hurricane comes they'll be more flooding & devastation. Look on maps or google the area. Being inland lessens the fury of storms.
