I know this question has been asked a million times before, but I still feel better asking myself.

Im going to Japan next year and i want to lose weight for the trip.
I'm 6' 2", 20 years old, weigh about 19 stone (266 pounds), I have been told that my body burns about 3100 colories naturally a day, due to my height and weight.
My physical activity level is low. I am a computer student so i dont get a lot of exercise at college. But I have finished now and im getting a full time job until i go to Uni in september.
I would ideally like to lose a lot of weight and then build up some muscle after, since I have been told that i can not do both at the same time.

Thanks a lot for all the answers. I appreciate any and all help i can get. Thanks again.

You say you wanna lose weight but your physical activity level is "low". Uhhh yea.....THATS YOUR PROBLEM. If you want to lose weight you have to raise your body temperature (cardio cardio cardio). Get out and run. That is my only answer. If you want it, you will do it. And watch what you eat. Cut out the snacks and junk. and whoever told you you cant lose weight and gain muscle at the same time is partially wrong. If you run and lose fat the muscle you have now will show more. But if you add weight training into your weekly workout your weight will not go down as much but the weight that you hold on to will be more so muscle than fat. In the end you will look better. Good Luck. Hoorah

Take every opportunity to keep active; take the stairs instead of the lift, walk whenever possible, meet up with a friend to go on a bike ride or swim etc, find a sport that you would like to do so you can enjoy exercising. It's not neccersary to go to the gym to lose the excess fat, so only pay to join one if you're going to stick to it. Get all of your favourite up beat songs onto an mp3 to help keep you motivated.
Once you have shed the fat, it would be best to join a gym for muscle building. I don't know much about it but the staff at the gym can give you loads of advice. Make sure you're doing it right 'cause it might damage your health.

Obviously, you need to eat right to. Try to cut out alcohol, reduce your portion sizes, only eat when you're truly hungry, if you think your hungry have a glass of water because thirst and hunger feel the same, choose foods low in fat and sugar, swap white breads for brown and red meats for white (chicken, turkey etc) and don't eat the skin off cuts of meat 'cause it's high in fat, don't fry any of your food, grilling is best.
Also make sure you drink atleast 2 litres of water a day.

It's all about making the right choices. If you need any support try out sparkpeople.com or go to youtube and look up the gut2cut group. One user 'losetogain' is a guy who's lost a couple hundred pounds and still has more to lose. He'll help you with anything. There are loads of guys loosing weight and building muscle on there and they all wanna help others, so give it a go.

Good luck, stick to it. It will be worth the effort.

The south beach diet

All these are a heathy approach to losing weight, whatever you don't go on a fad diet and increase you activity level. Maybe go for a 30 minute walk a day, I started walking to work and back everyday and I have really noticed a difference after only 2 weeks

Good luck x

Its not true you cant do that at the same time.
find daily calorie intake calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain, take off 300-400cal off that number and thats how much you need to lose.
eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours - it optimizes your metabolism)
5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day
8 glasses of water
have complex carbs for breakfast - they give you energy
have protein (lean meat, legumes etc) for dinner - repairs muscle
cardio exercise 4-6 times a week for 30-50min (ideally 45min because the first 20-30min body burns carbs and only then starts burning fat), light weight training (more muscle=faster metabolism)
dont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, pasta etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, icecream, candy etc) and nothing fried, oily.
ofcourse you can spoil yourself once in a while with a little treat:)

I'm over weight too. I have a job that gives me a crazy schedule not one week is the same as the next and the days change like day and night, never a set schedule. I need to lose lots of weight too, so I told myself that I will make it a point to work out for at least 30 min everyday and eat as healthy as i can. I will also drink nothing but water. I have been doing that for a week and i lost 6lbs. Oh No EATING after 8 pm. Nothing...

You might think about trying this book called "The Movie Star Diet" by Steve Simmons. It helped me lose thirty pounds in 2 1/2 months when I didn't think anything would work. My goal to begin with was only 20 lbs! It has a really easy plan to follow and an excellent workout as well.

you need to lower your calorie intake to around 2000 calories and eat healthily, cutting out all fatty foods.
Go to the gym at least 4 times a week and get them to make you a programme they will adjust it as you improve, or you could go jogging for an hour everyday. You need to do cardio and weights at the same time as you need muscle to help burn the fat. only doing cardio will only get you so far.

cut out carbs and eat little and often
go to your nearest hospital and ask about the diet that they put people on before a heart op, it´s a bit like the atkins diet but not quite as severe, of course it´s not a long term solution, give it a couple of months and your body will burn fat instead of carbs, once you´ve lost the wieght tak eup a sensible eating plan and then hit the wieghts for muscle, of course you can start pounding out the miles on a treadmill, rower or bike to help increase the amount of fat you are burning.

Go for protein rather then sugar to keep energy levels going strong rather than crashing. Edamame in pods may be the perfect snack since it takes some time to eat and a one-cup providing offers 12 grams of health proteins.
