Can dogs be affected by a scorpion sting?

Eet2008: Uhm I think so...I wouldn't be asking the question if it didn't apply to me. I live in Arizona, a desert, we get scorpions in and around the house all the time, more often in the summer season. I was only curious, he hasn't been stung, but I saw him starring and barking at one yesterday that I killed. I wondered if he would be affected by the sting, if in fact he would have gotten stung by one.

Thank you all for your answers. I spoke with animal control, in case it ever happens I do need to take my dog to the vet in case I notice any swelling or redness near the sting site on my dog. Other than that, they are pretty much immune to a scorpion sting, unless it's a baby scorpion, the most poisonous and deadly stings.

Thanks again!

I would not worry about it. The Scorpions in Arizona are nor really that nasty. What causes death in humans is an allergic reaction to the venom. I think dogs are more tolerant to the venom than humans. I was stung by a Scorpion in the Grand Canyon. It was a sharp pain when it stung and about two weeks of my hand aching. A bad reaction will result in difficulty in breathing.

Yes a dog can be affected by a scorpion sting. Just like humans and any other creature that has been stung they can die. If your dog was stung take it to the vet asap. And if you know what type it was or what it at least looked like make sure you tell your vet all the info so he can treat it properly. Treating for the wrong type of venom can be fatal for anyone especially animals.

Well this is certainly a weird question. I googled it for you and came up with this: After the Scorpion Sting, I Experienced... * little bumps around the sting site * sharp pain up through my armpit * a feeling like your throat is closing (but it isn’t) * numbness pretty much anywhere. As the night progressed, my whole face was numb and I couldn’t focus on anything. * tingling, like when your foot falls asleep, but you can’t wake it up. Scorpion Sting, Second Phase After about 6 to 8 hours the problems and symptoms related to the scorpion sting started to dissipate. Twelve hours after being stung by the scorpion, I still had numb feet, hands, nose and ears. Those effects remained for a large part of the next day. My feet were the last to feel normal; soaking them in a spa helped. According to Poison Control, some of the numbness can last several weeks. Lessons Learned About Being Stung By a Scorpion * If your eyes start to twitch, then it’s time to head to the hospital. * If your child is stung by a scorpion, watch for hyperactivity, twitching eyes, and drool * Itching at the sting site a day or two later * Scorpion stings affect different people differently. For some, it just feels like a bad bee sting. Others (like me) may experience many symptoms.

Yes, it sort of affects them the same way it would you or me. It hurts (like a bee sting) at first and then it itches. My dogs have been stung before, they are just way too curious. The only problem I had was that they wouldn't leave the sting alone. I fixed this by putting some stuff called after-bite on it. It has ammonia in it to neutralize the poison so it doesn't itch anymore. I got it at Wal-mart and it was all I had at the time. I'm sure they have some sort of a doggie alternative, but that worked fine for me and my pup. Unless your dog has a severe allergic reaction, he/she won't need any sort of medical attention.

Although not all scorpions are considered deadly venomous (except to insects, their main source of food), you shouldn't take a scorpion sting lightly. The venom of a scorpion contains digestive enzymes, which can cause extreme pain. The venom of one particular scorpion, Centruroides exilicauda, contains digestive enzymes as well as venom toxic to the nervous system. This species of scorpion is usually found in the southwestern United States. Fortunately, stings by this scorpion are rare.

Even so, you should be aware of the danger, both inside and outside your home – in certain parts of the United States scorpions are quite common.

The effect of the sting often varies with the size of your pet. If prompt veterinary treatment is not administered, pets bitten by this scorpion may not survive.
