OK, is this symptom during exertion or during rest ? is he smoking or not ? These are two basic questions that requires answer at the same time is he walking or not?
Take him to a cardiologist and have his problem sorted out, as I will not give you a preassumptive answer, after it is a life at stake. Forget the symptoms for the time being,OK.

What your friend might have is angina pectoris. Angina pectoris is a condition in which there is some narrowing of the coronary arteries supply the heart and therefore when there some form of exertion e.g exercise or stress, not enough blood flows to the heart and this presents with a central dull to crushing pain. The pain is relieved with rest or GTN.
In a myocardial infarction (heart attack) a major vessel in completely blocked and this produces symptoms such as sweating (called diaphoresis), central crushing or left sided chest pain that radiates (moves) over the deltoid region, scapula, or the left arm. The patient is also breathless.

some of the symptoms are heavy sweating, pain radiating to the left arm and jaw, burning in the chest. The blood pressure is usually elevated. If your friend is suspecting a possible heart attack he needs to go get an EKG, they are inexpensive and a quick sure method to diagnose an heart attack. Better be safe than sorry!

Chest pain, usually left-sided, that feels like pressure, tightness, or squeezing. Pain may radiate down the left arm or up to the jaw. Other symptoms are shortness of breath, nausea, sweatiness, lightheadedness, or anxiety. A given patient may have only a couple symptoms, and may not even feel pain (especially diabetics).
