Help! Is there anyone else whose's been monogamous for more than a decade, who just had their 1st herpes outbreak? Was he/she cheating or not? How can I know for sure?

No. Herpes Simplex is the exact same strain of virus as the Chicken Pox...Varicella Zoster......A cold sore, fever blister is also a type of herpes, however NOT an STD if on the mouth usually. I have been a urological nurse for years and have seen many cases. I have family members with experience with this STD. It does lay dormant or CAN forever. For you, a blood test can confirm if you are infected. You still may NEVER have an outbreak, just peace of mind knowing if you have the virus or not. Cheating would be the first thing that would come to a monogamous wifes mind, I would know this, but different virus......HPV.......He could have been a carrier since chicken pox as a kid. Stress tends to bring on an outbreak. LEADING CAUSE. Heat makes the outbreak worse, which is why a women usally have a more severe case. There are MANY new antivirals, topical and oral. Zovirax (or acyclovir is the generic), Famvir and other newer ones. Just like the commercial, IT is possible to transmit the virus even NOT during an outbreak. During the FIRST actual outbreak, the symptoms are bad....Severe pain at the sight, (also same strain of virus as shingles), blisters, drainage, itching and then crusting when drying up....Severely contagious when blisters are draining and opened. If it were me, I would confront him regarding cheating, however, HE may feel just horrible about it himself (which I'm sure he does regardless) and call my gyno. He/she or the nurse can explain other possibilities.....I like to give the benefit of the doubt and I do KNOW that it can lay dormant with no signs or symptoms EVER. TRY not to jump the gun, as I did, with EX having HPV....Until you know without a shadow of a doubt....My ex is my ex by the way, because he was cheating and continues now with the "other woman". I don't want you to think I am biased for that reason. Please....Just call your gyno and talk with them. You may not desire or require an appointment. Bless your heart. That is very stressful. Best of luck to you both.

At least 45 million American adults and adolescents have genital herpes -- that's 1 out of every 4 to 5 people, making it one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases. Since the late 1970s, the number of Americans with genital herpes infection has increased 30%, mostly in teens and young adults.

I did some research and this is what I found that may help you answer your question.

The incubation period-the time from exposure to genital herpes until the primary outbreak of infection-is 2 to 14 days. The entire body may be affected, causing you to feel as though you have the flu. Blisters appear around the genitals or anus or in the area where the virus entered the body. The blisters break within a few days and become painful, oozing sores. The sores usually heal within 3 weeks (without treatment) and do not leave scars. Sores that occur in women usually take longer to heal than sores that occur in men.

How often outbreaks occur depends on the person. On average, people with herpes experience about four outbreaks a year. The first outbreak usually is the most painful and takes the longest to heal. The pain and recovery time often decrease with each outbreak.

The herpes virus can lay dormant in the nerve bundle for quite a while before an outbreak so there is a chance that he hasn't been cheating. another explanation is if you suffer from cold sores which are also a form of herpes and have given him oral sex you may have passed it on that way. However it will be worth making an appointment at your local sexual health center to get some information and to check yourself out for STIs especially if you have concerns about his faithfulness

Not necessarily. If he has had partners before you then he could have contracted genital herpes from one of his past partners and passed it onto you. Or you could have contracted it from a previous partner, it's not common but herpes can lie dormant for long periods of time even after being infected and you just started showing symptoms. Also some one can have oral or genital herpes with out having symptoms of it. A lot of people that have the cold sore virus contract it during child hood by being kissed by some one that has it. There is even a small chance of passing any type of herpes on when you don't have symptoms of it. Oral herpes can be passed from the mouth to the genitals during oral sex and cold sores are very common to have. It's more likely to happen when there is a break out but as I said before they can be passed when there are no visible signs of a sore. So you may want to ask him to get tested for herpes. If he has been your only sexual partner then you most likely contracted herpes from him.

Not necessarily. Herpes can lie dormant for years, and depending on the person outbreaks can happen once a year or once a month, and some have no symptoms for years on end.
It's likely that one partner had the virus and it was dormant, and that eventually it caught up to the other partner. You can spread it with NO symptoms.
Check the link below. It sounds like just a very unfortunate situation, I wouldn't accuse anyone of cheating.
Best wishes.

I got clinically diagnosed with the herpes simplex virus (type 2) about six years ago, when I was still attending college and had a stupid one-night stand. I just made a massive mistake that one time and suddenly I felt like I was going to have to live with the consequences for the rest of my life. The worst part was feeling I could never date guys again. In the end, who wants to go out with someone that has sores around her you-know-what? But since a friend shared this video everything changed https://tr.im/CuresHERPES2o15jBKB

Not only was I able to clear away all traces of the hsv from my body in less than 21 days, but I was also able to begin dating once more. I even met the man of my dreams. This method provided me the opportunity to be happy and experience real love. Now I want to enable you too by sharing this with the whole World.
