My mom is suffering really bad from gallbladder attacks. She was due to have surgery next month. Today, she is so sick and I called the surgeon and told him she was having a major attack. I wanted to see if I could take her to the E.R. and possibly have emergency surgery. She hasn't eaten in days and nothing stays down. I was told there was no such thing as emergency gall bladder surgery and she would have to wait two more weeks for surgery. Isn't this crazy. Dad and I have got to watch her suffer for the next few weeks. She already suffers from fibromyalgia and neuropathy. I don't think she's gonna make it. What in the world should we do?

Take your mother to an emergency room now. I have been an RN for almost 40 years, and I have seen many emergency cholecystectomies done. No one should have to suffer like she is suffering. I had to have my gallbladder out, too, and the pain is worse than being in labor. My pain was intermittent, so I was able to schedule it and wait, but if your mom hasn't eaten in days and is vomiting, this could kill her.

So bundle her up NOW and take her to an ER. They cannot refuse to treat your mom. Don't wait another minute. And find another doctor. This one sounds like an insensitive jerk! God bless.

Your Mom should have some strong pain killer to help her through the attack. Take her to the ER if she doesn't have this medication on hand. She runs the risk of the gallstone getting stuck in the duct and causing a backup that causes pancreatitis which can be deadly.
The good news is the surgery works.

the doctor was right, while the gall bladder will make her miserable, it isn't going to kill her, just make her wish she were dead. Surgeons tend to have very little empathy for such patients, mostly because the problem is brought on by poor diet and being over weight. I am not saying it is right, or even fair, but that is the way it is. As long as your mom keeps drinking clear fluids, she will be ok and survive. In fact, a clear liquid diet will likely make her feel much better. Get her 7Up, flavored waters and fat free broths, make her some jello. If she sticks to these things, the pain will abate and she will stay hydrated.

Get another Dr....I waited until the Dr scheduled the surgery and I just about died from the infection.....If I had it removed when the pains began I would have never had the problems that I ended up having. Really you have to get another Dr. Obviously this one couldn't care a less. Listen to your gut, moms are a Strong Breed, it takes a LOT to make a woman complain (Physically)
Sending Hugs her way....

No such thing as "emergency gallbladder surgery?"

Bullsh!t.

If your mom's gallbladder is infected, she will DEFINITELY need "emergency gallbladder surgery."

Keep an eye on her and make sure that she's not feverish, which could indicate that she has cholecystitis. Untreated cholecystitis can lead to sepsis, shock and death.

Of course, if she doesn't have a fever, and she's lucid, then it's probably not an emergency, even if it does hurt like hell.

That is totally crazy and makes no sense at all.I had bad attacks before i had mine out but maybe she should go to the emergency room so they can at least give her something to help with her pain; and give her something to help from throwing -up.. when you go to the emergency room go early in the morning like 4.oo so she won;t have to wait to long in there.hopefully when they see how much she;s suffering the;ll get that surgery soon..go there so it;s documented so her dr. realizes how crazy he is to make her wait... good luck to your mom and god bless you all ,My prayers are with you as she needs all the help she can get,,,Thanks for being such a sweet person to help your mom; she;s lucky to have you.,.

this attack will pass, but she will suffer until then. I've had them, and had my gallbladder taken out. There is a medication that helps with the attacks, and her doctor should have prescribed it until she can have her surgery.
