I work with this lady that won't shut up about her daughter being a vegetarian and thinks it's "so cool" how she came to her and asked if she could be one. Only problem is, she keeps slipping in comments about her eating meat (only fish and chicken she says).
So I say, "If she eats meat, she's not a vegetarian." She replies, "No, if she eats meat, she's not a VEGAN."
I know that some vegetarians eat milk and eggs. . . . but MEAT???? Doesn't this defeat the purpose, even if it is just fish and chicken.?

This is driving me crazy because she treats me like an idiot when I say she's not a vegetarian if she eats meat. I can't stand it. Someone set me straight here.

Wow, I didn't know so many people were so judgemental. "Does it really matter?" "Just let it go" "Why is it driving you crazy?"

YES, it matters!! Because she talks about it CONSTANTLY and treats me like an IDIOT when I question her.

I am not a vegetarian, but I deeply respect those that are for their dedication. I just don't understand people who say they are a vegetarian for attention or whatever. To me, if you eat everything but red meat, you are not a vegetarian!

I didn't ask if I was a nice person.

She's not a vegetarian. She's a hypocrite.

I've heard of pesco-vegetarians. They eat fish, maybe poultry, but consider themselves vegetarians. I'm not buying it for a second.

That's like saying I'm a bovo- pesco- poultro- swino- ovo- lacto- vegetarian, because I only eat beef, fish, poultry, pork, milk, eggs, and plant products. (That's not true BTW, because I also eat rabbit, squirrel, goat, and mutton. Basically everything but "longpork", as caniballism is quite frowned upon.)

Nobody ever says "I'm a vegetarian, but I do eat beef" or "I'm a vegetarian, except for pork". Why should people who eat fish or chicken get to claim to be a vegetarian?

oh my, the misinformation. no wonder people think they're vegetarians when they eat fish.

fish is meat. meat is not vegetarian. why can't people see the correlation between that?

a vegetarian (contrary to what some sites and people will tell you) does not eat fish, chicken, and all other animals. pesco vegetarian should not even exist! that's just another term people want to use because they want to be labeled into a special category. if the only meat you eat is chicken or fish, then you are STILL an omnivore. there is no special title for those people!

i would say to ignore this coworker of yours, but she's spreading inaccurate information to all your other coworkers. print out this page for her:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vegetarian
the only questionable part of the diagram shown under "main varieties" is that vegans consume honey. vegans do not consume honey.

best wishes! :o)

See, it's the ignorance of people that have caused this WILD belief that a vegetarian diet has exceptions. Fish is meat, chicken is meat, EVERYTHING that has a face is MEAT!
If you really don't like it, than tell her straight forwardly "You know, you always treat me like you're superior. I wonder if it's because you don't know simple things, like a vegetarian doesn't eat meat. Is this why?"

I hate ignorant people that think fish, and chicken are exceptions...

And... for your stupid ignorant coworker, explain to her that VEGANs don't consume meat, or ANY animal product like Diary, eggs, cheese, others.
I hate people that are this stupid.

If you don't want to just go up to her, and jump down her throat, than tell her you were speaking with a vegetarian, and they have informed you of the real definitions. Say that you asked them about fish, and than they told you that no vegetarian consumes meat, including fish.

I find that's a common misconception with the majority of people I meet who question me about my meat status. They seem to think that, despite the definition of "vegetarian", it's shocking that I don't indulge in fish or, with some people, chicken.

You're right, she's wrong. Maybe try telling her that it's great that she loves her daughter so much as to bring her into every conversation (though, obviously phrased nicer), but that you'd like to move on to a different subject.

Also, I must question why you are friends with someone who doesn't respect you enough to take your opinions seriously and tries to make you feel like an imbecile when she thinks you're wrong. Consider moving on from this friendship/relationship.

aha a vegetarian person dose not eat or kill any animals, here is the list of different type of vegetarian :-
Lacto Ovo Vegetarian
A lacto ovo vegetarian does not eat meat, fish or poultry, but eats eggs and milk. They eat eggs and products made with eggs in them, yogurt, cheese, milk and ice creams.

Lacto Vegetarian
A lacto vegetarian does not eat meat, fish, poultry or eggs, but includes dairy products in their diet. They will eat milk, ice cream (that does not include eggs), yogurt and cheese. They would avoid ice creams, baked goods, pancakes and veggie burgers that contain eggs.

Vegan
A vegan does not eat any fish, meat, poultry, eggs, dairy products or foods that contain any of these products. They also do not use any non-food items that contain products from animals, including wool from sheep, leather and silk. Vegans often do not eat honey, because bees may be killed while harvesting it.

No she is NOT a vegetarian NOR is she a vegan. Your worker is confused and ignorant. Ignorance is the reason animal testing, animal farming--basically animal cruelty--continues. Anyhow I know why you're angry--a lot of kids at school tell me, "Oh, I'm vegetarian!" and then I get all happy till lunchtime, when I find they're buying chicken poppers. I ask them about it and they reply, "Oh, I don't eat red meat. Chicken is not meat. Chicken is chicken." Ignorant blithering madness.

wow that lady and her daughter are really something.
you are right, if she does eat meat then she's just a meat eater, obviously not a vegetarian.

print out the definition of vegetarian and show it to her. THEN let's see who's gonna be treated like an idiot.

I am a "semi-vegetarian". I do not eat beef or pork. I still eat seafood, chicken, and turkey. Being a Vegan is not eating anything that comes from an animal including cheese, eggs, etc. Vegetarians do not eat meat, but you could be a lacto ovo vegetarian and eat eggs and dairy.

She is not a vegetarian if she still eats meat. A vegetarian is someone who doesn't eat meat. Eggs aren't meat, and neither are dairy products, but poultry and fish are. (Once someone told me that I was a vegan, not a vegetarian, because I didn't eat poultry and fish. that's not true because I still eat dairy and eggs, so...)

You are correct.
Vegetarians do not eat animals.
:)

DEFINITION of a Vegetarian:
"A vegetarian is someone living on a diet of grains, pulses, nuts, seeds, vegetables and fruits with or without the use of dairy products and eggs.
A vegetarian does not eat any meat, poultry, game, fish, shellfish or crustacea, or slaughter by-products.

People who don’t eat red meat but do eat chicken or fish are making a very important first step, but they aren’t vegetarians. We usually call such people meat-reducers."
http://www.vegsoc.org/newveg/fft/basics.html

Edit- Vegans eat no animals (like vegetarians) but also eat no product that came from animals, such as milk, eggs and honey. Vegans also do not wear or use materials made from animals, like wool, leather or silk.
:)
