I have HPV and when my pap smear results came in they were a little irregular. Is this normal for a person who has HPV? (This was my first pap since I was diagnosed) Should I be worried about anything being cancerous? (Oh, dear... ]:) My doctor said to not worry about it because it is probably irregular just because of the virus. But to me doctors just say things like that so you don't go crazy.

Has anyone been through this?

This happens all the times, so I would not lose sleep, but you do need to follow up. The doctor should do a biopsy of the areas that look abnormal. What this is is the doctor goes in, like a PAP smear and trims some areas. Yes, it does pinch and doesn't feel too great (in my experience the male GYNs I've had tend to say it hurts less than really does, but it really doesn't hurt too much!)
Then they will coat the places in a brown antibacterial substance that inhibits bleeding that will also give you a brown discharge for a few days.
After they get the results back there are a few possibilities. Either it really is nothing and you're on a once a year PAP schedule. Or it is a little something and they put you on a 6 month (i.e you go in every 6 month) for a PAP smear to keep an eye on it. Or it comes back as cancerous or pre cancerous. This happened to me, and it really was no big deal. There are ways to get rid of the tissue. I had a LEEP procedure that shaved off the lower part of my cervix (which will grow back and shouldn't affect my ability to have children) and it hurt so little I went to a job interview that very afternoon!

It really will be ok :)

I have had a few abnormal pap smears. The first one was pre-cancerous cells which did eventually turn into cervical cancer (it was the first pap smear I EVER had).

The other abnormal pap smears turned out to be nothing. My doctor said that for some women, just having HPV in their bodies can cause a pap smear to come back abnormal even though nothing is wrong.

Don't stress out too much about this. Just stay on top of your pap smears, get any biopsys or colpsocopys that they want you to get, and make sure you ask your doctor questions when you have them! It's your health and your life so you want to take care of it! Good luck!

You should be worried if further steps have not been taken. Untreated cervical cancer can kill you. If they are going to irradiate you, etc. make sure you ask about freezing your eggs beforehand, if you think that you may want to have children.
