Are we like tied to them with an umbilical cord?

Uuuh, if we realized that we can travel long distances enjoyably without them, wouldn't we use them less? Or am I missing something?

OK granted, humans are fuel burning engines but I think we can make an exception in that case. Environmental responsibility doesn't mean that you have to stop breathing.

Excellent question. Probably 20-30 kilometres from a mechanical type, but isn't every living thing a fuel burning engine?

I think you should be less concerned with proximity and more concerned with frequency of use.

Just because you are close to something does not mean you are using it or tied to it.
