All energy has an environmental impact.
Do you want to ask what form of energy production & distribution has the least amount of negative impact & most positive on our atmosphere, terra & oceans?

I saw that garbage eating machine on Dirty Jobs on the Discovery Channel & it is disgusting... but the energy benefits coupled with the landuse(landfill) issue are impressive qualifications for the answer to this question.

There is no form of energy that has no environmental impact.
The choices left to us are what forms of energy have the least environmental impact.
For example the burning of coal to produce electricity has a devastating environmental impact.
If you replace electricity produced by burning coal with electricity produced by using wind turbines you eliminate many of the polutants associated with coal.
It is true that the wind turbines usd to generate electricity do kill birds.
You r choice becomes a trade off between the damage done by coal fired power plants and the damage done by wind turbines.
Personally I think that the wind turbines have a much smaller negative impact. For this reason I recommend that we use wind turbines to generate electricity as much as possible.

every form of energy use will have an impact of some sort on the environment.
When you "use" energy.. you really just convert it from one form to another.
gasoline stores energy chemically
It gets burned in the engine converting the chemical energy to heat and pressure.
The pressure is used to move the pistons which drive the engine and transmission to make the car move.
The car moving involves overcoming friction of the tires on the road and the body of the car moving through the air.
Overcoming friction creates heat...
So the chemical energy stored in gasoline ALL goes to heat when you look for where it went.
Analyzing where electricity goes when you use it... in most cases it ends up going to heat and light.
and light energy goes to heat when it is absorbed by something solid... Or gets stored as chemical energy by photosynthesis if a plant absorbs it...

Theres this amazing article in popular science ("The Prophet of Garbage) about a machine (already built and working) that turns virtually any form of garbage into nothing but energy and glass. What's more, once it gets started, it runs itself, feeding off of the energy that its transforming from matter.

There is no such thing. We need to manufacture the equipment to capture it (e.g., a wind turbine for wind) and with that and all the infrastructure it produces carbon emissions.
Not to mention the carbon generated as we use the energy...

solar, wind, tidal, magnetic, gravitational, and geothermal
Most commonly used. Solar, Wind, and Geothermal.
Of course there is alway human/animal but how many people do you see riding a horse to work any more?

None, but human power is the most efficient. (breathing doesn't pollute that much)
